security, plans to step down at the end of July after nearly two years with the Department of Homeland Security unit.<\/p>\n<p>Wyman, whom CISA Director Jen Easterly picked for the role in October 2021, joined the agency after nearly nine years as Washington\u2019s secretary of state, building a reputation as a leading voice on election security against both cyber and physical threats. After the 2020 presidential election, she was one of a few of Republican officials to challenge her own party\u2019s attempts to overturn the outcome.<\/p>\n<p>According to a CISA press release, Wyman will take an unspecified private-sector role, while Cait Conley, a senior adviser to Easterly, will take on \u201cadditional responsibilities\u201d overseeing the agency\u2019s election-security initiatives, including engagement and coordination with state and local officials.<\/p>\n<p>Conley is a former executive director of the Defending Digital Democracy Project at Harvard University\u2019s Belfer Center and a former staffer on the Biden administration\u2019s National Security Council. At the Belfer Center, Conley \u201cled the development and implementation of strategies, tools and recommendations for election administrators, election infrastructure providers, campaign organizations and leaders involved in democratic processes to better defend against cybersecurity threats,\u201d the CISA release read.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad ad--inline_1 \">\n<div class=\"ad__inner\"> <span class=\"screen-reader-text\">Advertisement<\/span> <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Wyman has frequently spoken about the threats posed by online misinformation and disinformation \u2014 including the potential for election-office insiders to <a href=\"https:\/\/statescoop.com\/tina-peters-deputy-clerk-knisely-pleads-guilty-colorado-election\/\">act on those falsehoods<\/a>, which has become a more common phenomenon in recent years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is the first time we\u2019re seeing people who work in an election office or the chief election officer share information \u2014 proprietary information \u2014 in ways we haven\u2019t seen before,\u201d Wyman told StateScoop <a href=\"https:\/\/statescoop.com\/election-security-insider-threats-cisa\/\">last year<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Wyman has also talked passionately about the rising tide of physical and online threats against election workers, which has fueled an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2023\/06\/23\/1183931372\/death-threats-and-harassment-2024-election-workers-already-are-scared\">nationwide exodus<\/a> of experienced poll workers. \u201cThat\u2019s part of why I joined CISA, to provide state and local officials with resources they don\u2019t have,\u201d she told the Senate Judiciary Committee last year.<\/p>\n<p>Easterly said last December that CISA is \u201claser-focused\u201d on preparing for the 2024 election, which Wyman said earlier this year will face no shortage of threats.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe face continuing threats from a growing number of foreign state sponsored threat actors intent on targeting our election infrastructure and voters through cyber activity and malign foreign influence operations,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nextgov.com\/cybersecurity\/2023\/03\/cisa-election-security-still-under-threat-cyber-and-physical-level\/384172\/\">she said in March<\/a> at the University of California, Los
