A cursory review by CyberScoop showed roughly 710 files purportedly obtained from the <a href=\"https:\/\/dnbl.ncia.nato.int\/Pages\/DNBLHomePage.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NATO Community of Interest Cooperation Portal<\/a>, which the agency says is an \u201cunclassified information sharing and collaboration environment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNATO cyber experts are actively looking into the recent claims associated with a Communities of Interest Cooperation Portal,\u201d a NATO official said in an email. \u201cWe face malicious cyber activity on a daily basis and NATO and Allies are responding to this reality, including by strengthening our ability to detect, prevent and respond to such activities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The files \u2014 including some dating to this month, while others are several years old \u2014 reveal agency personnel names and contact information, lists of software used for various purposes (along with vendor information and version numbers) and much more.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad ad--inline_1 \">\n<div class=\"ad__inner\"> <span class=\"screen-reader-text\">Advertisement<\/span> <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cDo you like leaks? Us too!\u201d a message posted alongside screenshots of the purported document and a link to download the full set. \u201cDo you like NATO? We don\u2019t! And so, we present \u2026 a leak of hundreds of documents retrieved from NATO\u2019s COI portal, intended only only for NATO countries and partners.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The group also claimed its attack on NATO \u201chas nothing to do with the war between Russia and Ukraine, this is a retaliation against the countries of NATO for their attacks on human rights (- Also, its fun to leak documents ^w^). We hope this attack will get the message across to each country within NATO.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Department of Defense did not immediately respond to a request for comment.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cyberscoop.com\/tag\/siegedsec\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">SiegedSec<\/a> is known for politically motivated attacks that typically don\u2019t have a financial connection. Earlier this month, the <a href=\"https:\/\/cyberscoop.com\/siegedsec-hack-transition-bans-satellite-systems\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">group claimed an attack<\/a> on satellite receivers and industrial control systems around the U.S., \u201cparticularly in states banning gender affirming care.\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/therecord.media\/kentucky-arkansas-say-abortion-ban-leaks-used-publicly-available-data\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Last summer<\/a> it claimed attacks on state government agencies in Kentucky and Arkansas over those states\u2019 legislative efforts to limit access to abortion. <\/p>\n<p>After those operations, a SiegedSec member told CyberScoop the group focuses \u201cmore on the message than the money. Although we mostly consider ourselves more blackhat than hacktivists. Money is not our main goal, most of the time we just want to have fun and destroy stuff.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad ad--inline_1 \">\n<div class=\"ad__inner\"> <span class=\"screen-reader-text\">Advertisement<\/span> <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>In April, a pro-Russian hacktivist persona known as Killnet created a Telegram channel called \u201cKILLNET \u2013 [F***] NATO\u201d and posted more than two dozen files purportedly stolen from NATO, along with alleged usernames and passwords associated with NATO systems. Cybersecurity experts, including several at Google\u2019s Mandiant, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mandiant.com\/resources\/blog\/killnet-new-capabilities-older-tactics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said in a July 20 report<\/a> that at least some of the documents appeared legitimate and represented a \u201csignificant increase in capability\u201d for a group known previously for annoying but relatively low-level distributed denial-of-service attacks.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s no indication of any links between SiegedSec and Killnet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOver the last few months there have been claims by multiple groups of NATO leaks but the screenshots they\u2019ve provided look legitimate,\u201d Rosa Smothers, a former CIA cyberthreat analyst and current executive at KnowBe4, said in an emailed statement. \u201cFull names, photos and home addresses were included in the leaked data which poses a direct threat to those NATO personnel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><\/body> <\/p>\n<footer
