(Scoop News Group photo) <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/header>\n<div class=\"single-article__content\">\n<div class=\"single-article__content-inner has-drop-cap\"> <html readability=\"23.209807073955\"><body readability=\"48.521591871296\"><\/p>\n<p>The rewrite of a presidential policy directive that defines how the federal government manages and interacts with the 16 critical infrastructure sectors will more clearly define the role of government agencies, a National Security Council official said Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>Jonathan Murphy, director of critical infrastructure cybersecurity at the NSC, said that the rewrite of <a href=\"https:\/\/obamawhitehouse.archives.gov\/the-press-office\/2013\/02\/12\/presidential-policy-directive-critical-infrastructure-security-and-resil\">presidential policy directive 16<\/a> will \u201cemphasize\u201d the increasing role of the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, the rewrite will ensure that the sector risk management agencies that oversee the critical sectors \u201clay out a positive vision for our organizing structure, but also how to execute that responsibility,\u201d Murphy said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re looking across all of the 16 infrastructure sectors to identify where levers exist to enable the federal government to have positive, reliable outcomes [and] set minimum cybersecurity requirements for those critical infrastructure sectors,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad ad--inline_1 \">\n<div class=\"ad__inner\"> <span class=\"screen-reader-text\">Advertisement<\/span> <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The White House \u2014 through the Office of the National Cyber Director and the Office of Management and Budget \u2014 is also exploring how to <a href=\"https:\/\/cyberscoop.com\/cybersecurity-strategy-harmonization-critical-infrastructure\/\">harmonize existing cybersecurity regulations<\/a> for those 16 sectors. The change comes after years of lax or nonexistent regulations for critical sectors, while critical services are also coming under steady ransomware attacks.<\/p>\n<p>The administration\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/cyberscoop.com\/biden-national-cybersecurity-strategy-2023\/\">national cybersecurity strategy<\/a> stressed that the voluntary management of cyber risks by critical sectors is no longer acceptable.<\/p>\n<p>The decade-old policy was issued during the Obama administration \u2014 before CISA was created, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CISAgov\/status\/1725168293965598919\">five years ago on Thursday<\/a> \u2014 and is a much anticipated policy rewrite.
