(Photo by SERGEI CHUZAVKOV \/ AFP) <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/header>\n<div class=\"single-article__content\">\n<div class=\"single-article__content-inner has-drop-cap\"> <html readability=\"37.20653907496\"><body readability=\"74.899351564703\"><\/p>\n<p>The Russian hackers that targeted Ukraine\u2019s largest telecommunications provider in December, knocking out mobile phone and home internet service to roughly 24 million people, were in the company\u2019s networks for months before wiping \u201calmost everything,\u201d a senior Ukrainian government official said in an interview published Thursday. <\/p>\n<p>Illia Vitiuk, the head of the Security Service of Ukraine\u2019s (SBU) cybersecurity department, <a href=\"http:\/\/reuters.com\/world\/europe\/russian-hackers-were-inside-ukraine-telecoms-giant-months-cyber-spy-chief-2024-01-04\/(opens%20in%20a%20new%20tab)%20%20Currently%20selected%20link%20settings\">told Reuters<\/a> in late December that the attack was likely the work of the potent Russian military intelligence hacking unit known as \u201cSandworm,\u201d and that the hackers had accessed Kyivstar\u2019s network since May 2023 but perhaps even earlier.<\/p>\n<p>Vitiuk also said during the interview, which was published Thursday, that the attack on the telecommunications firm caused \u201cdisastrous\u201d destruction, wiping \u201calmost everything,\u201d including thousands of virtual servers and PCs belonging to the firm. <\/p>\n<p>Vitiuk told Reuters that the attackers \u201cwould have been able to steal personal information, understand the locations of phones, intercept SMS-messages and perhaps steal Telegram accounts with the level of access they gained.\u201d <\/p>\n<div class=\"ad ad--inline_1 \">\n<div class=\"ad__inner\"> <span class=\"screen-reader-text\">Advertisement<\/span> <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Kyivstar said in a statement provided to CyberScoop on Thursday that it \u201cdoes not confirm the information\u201d regarding the length of time that the attackers had access to its networks. \u201cThe official investigation into the cyberattack on the Kyivstar network \u2026 is still ongoing and various versions are being considered, none of which is yet final,\u201d the company said in the statement, adding that it has seen no evidence of any \u201cleakage of personal data.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>The company did not respond to a follow-up question regarding the discrepancy between its version of events and Vitiuk\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p>The company said in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/kyivstar\/posts\/pfbid028S6yg1AjqrmzQZzkRPUbjFX8HMyiLPs3wpo2cKHE8GLeiWEdKZb3WHSgehxxANejl\">a Dec. 13 message posted to Facebook<\/a> that \u201cthe rumors about the destruction of our \u2018computers and servers’\u201d were \u201cfake,\u201d adding that subscriber data was safe.<\/p>\n<p>Vitiuk <a href=\"https:\/\/ssu.gov.ua\/en\/novyny\/sbu-dopomohla-vidbyty-novi-kiberataky-rf-na-kyivstar-illia-vitiuk\">said in a statement posted to the SBU\u2019s website Thursday<\/a> that the SBU helped fend off additional attacks against Kyivstar: \u201cThe enemy was hoping to strike several times in a row to keep people disconnected for as long as possible. In this case, other operators might not have been able to withstand the prolonged overload of their networks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The attack, <a href=\"https:\/\/cyberscoop.com\/ukraines-largest-mobile-communications-provider-down-after-apparent-cyber-attack\/\">which took place on Dec. 12<\/a>, knocked out service for the company\u2019s customers for at least a day, and sometimes longer.
