Mark Warner, D-Va., said he is concerned that this election cycle \u2014 which includes more than half of the <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/global-elections-2024-preview-cb77b0940964c5c95a9affc8ebb6f0b7\">global population<\/a> \u2014 will face more threats than the last presidential election.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am worried that we are less prepared for foreign intervention in our elections in 2024 than we were in 2020,\u201d Warner said during a Trellix and Scoop News Group cybersecurity summit in Washington, D.C.<\/p>\n<p>Warner also noted that during the 2020 election, officials fighting foreign intervention at the Trump administration were \u201cbetter geared, the team was better placed than I unfortunately believe [we are] right now.\u201d <\/p>\n<div class=\"ad ad--inline_1 \">\n<div class=\"ad__inner\"> <span class=\"screen-reader-text\">Advertisement<\/span> <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Warner pointed to a court case that directed CISA to <a href=\"https:\/\/fedscoop.com\/cisa-director-and-usds-administrator-among-federal-officials-barred-from-contacting-social-media-companies\/\">cease alerting<\/a> social media companies of posts that are spreading misinformation about the election, following outrage from right-wing provocateurs. Warner also laid blame on the lawyers in the Biden administration more so than CISA.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think the administration\u2019s lawyers, frankly, are being way too cautious,\u201d Warner said. \u201cNSA, CISA, ODNI, FBI literally had no communication with any of the social media platforms on election interference since July. And that ought to scare the hell out of all of us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Warner said that there are more Americans who have \u201cless faith in our system\u201d such that they might fall for misinformation, disinformation and malinformation. He pointed to a recent case of an <a href=\"https:\/\/cyberscoop.com\/lingo-life-biden-ai-robocall\/\">AI-generated robocall<\/a> imitating President Joe Biden that urged Democratic primary voters in New Hampshire to stay away from polls. Authorities have traced the call to the <a href=\"https:\/\/cyberscoop.com\/new-hampshire-ai-robocall-biden\/\">Texas-based telecommunications firm Life Corporation<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Warner said the <a href=\"https:\/\/cyberscoop.com\/how-russias-2016-election-information-warfare-worked\/\">2016 election interference<\/a> campaign by the Kremlin will look like \u201cchild\u2019s play\u201d compared to 2024, largely due to the impact of AI increasing the scale and speed of these operations.
