(Luis Alvarez\/Getty Images) <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/header>\n<div class=\"single-article__content\">\n<div class=\"single-article__content-inner has-drop-cap\"> <html readability=\"38.613148788927\"><body readability=\"79.90820165538\"><\/p>\n<p>The website used by the ransomware group believed to be responsible for the breach of one of the United States\u2019s largest health care payment processors went down Friday amid reports that the incident has put major financial pressure on medical providers and made it difficult for consumers to get the medicine they need. <\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not yet clear why the website for ALPHV, also known as BlackCat, was down Friday afternoon. The FBI \u2014 which had led an operation that <a href=\"https:\/\/cyberscoop.com\/fbi-seizes-alphv-leak-website-hours-later-ransomware-gang-claims-it-unseized-it\/\">seized some of the site\u2019s infrastructure in December<\/a>, only to have the group bounce back a short time later \u2014 did not respond to a request for comment. Websites used by ransomware groups are sometimes unreliable, going up and down, but the site had been accessible this week and even into Friday.<\/p>\n<p>Health providers across the country have said the attack on Change Healthcare has hampered their ability to process payments. Some smaller practices may have to close down if the problem persists, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/us-news\/outages-change-healthcare-cyberattack-causing-financial-mess-doctors-rcna141321\">NBC News reported Friday<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>Rick Pollack, the president and CEO of the American Hospital Association, <a href=\"http:\/\/aha.org\/news\/perspective\/2024-02-29-supporting-hospitals-and-patients-after-cyberattack-change-healthcare\">said in a statement<\/a> that the attack was \u201cthe most serious incident of its kind leveled against a U.S. health care organization.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad ad--inline_1 \">\n<div class=\"ad__inner\"> <span class=\"screen-reader-text\">Advertisement<\/span> <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The most recent update from Change Healthcare, <a href=\"https:\/\/status.changehealthcare.com\/incidents\/hqpjz25fn3n7\">posted Friday afternoon<\/a>, said the company had put up a \u201cnew instance\u201d of its Change Healthcare Rx ePrescribing service and enabled it for all customers as of 1 p.m. central time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are working on multiple approaches to restore the impacted environment and continue to be proactive and aggressive with all our systems, and if we suspect any issue with the system, we will immediately take action,\u201d the statement read. The company had previously said it was working with law enforcement and the cybersecurity firms Palo Alto Networks and Mandiant to respond to the incident. <\/p>\n<p>The Department of Health and Human Services did not immediately respond to a request for comment.<\/p>\n<p>Eric Goldstein, the executive assistant director for cybersecurity at the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, told CyberScoop in an emailed statement Friday that CISA \u201cis working with our partners and Change Healthcare to support remediation, assist impacted organizations, and share timely information to reduce the likelihood of similar intrusions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>ALPHV has claimed responsibility for the attack on Change Healthcare, a subsidiary of Optum and UnitedHealth Group, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/topics\/9484\/unitedhealth-group\/#topicOverview\">largest<\/a> health care company in the U.S. with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/brucejapsen\/2024\/01\/12\/unitedhealth-group-profits-hit-23-billion-in-2023\/?sh=6c62047f67ad\">revenues of nearly $372 billion in 2023<\/a>. Change Healthcare processes 15 billion health care transactions annually and touches 1 in every 3 patient records, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aha.org\/news\/perspective\/2024-02-29-supporting-hospitals-and-patients-after-cyberattack-change-healthcare\">the American Hospital Association<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad ad--inline_1 \">\n<div class=\"ad__inner\"> <span class=\"screen-reader-text\">Advertisement<\/span> <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>In December, the FBI carried out an operation to takedown infrastructure associated with ALPHV, but the group immediately returned, claiming to have \u201cunseized\u201d the infrastructure targeted by law enforcement. Since then, the group <a href=\"https:\/\/cyberscoop.com\/ransomware-alphv-healthcare-pharmacies\/\">has stepped up its attacks<\/a> on health care organizations. <\/p>\n<p>ALPHV is a notorious ransomware-as-a-service operation with a track record of attacks around the world and <a href=\"https:\/\/cyberscoop.com\/ransomware-alphv-healthcare-pharmacies\/\">said<\/a> in a message on its website Wednesday that the group obtained 6 terabytes of \u201csensitive\u201d information in its attack. <\/p>\n<p>Change Healthcare detected the attack on Feb. 21 and quickly assessed that its outages were the result of a cyberattack, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/status.changehealthcare.com\/incidents\/hqpjz25fn3n7\">a rolling update<\/a> posted to the company\u2019s website. <\/p>\n<p>The company \u201cproactively isolated the impacted systems from other connecting systems,\u201d UnitedHealth Group said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sec.gov\/Archives\/edgar\/data\/731766\/000073176624000045\/unh-20240221.htm\">Feb. 21 Securities and Exchange Commission filing<\/a>.
