Users should either downgrade the utility to a safer version or disable ssh entirely so that the backdoor cannot be exploited.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"ContentParagraph ContentParagraph_align_left\" data-testid=\"content-paragraph\"><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\">The code injection vulnerability (<\/span><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cve.org\/CVERecord?id=CVE-2024-3094\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"ContentText-BodyTextChunk ContentText-BodyTextChunk_link\" rel=\"noopener\">CVE-2024-3094<\/a><\/span><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\">), injects code into the authentication process that allows malicious actor to gain remote access to the system. <\/span><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.redhat.com\/en\/blog\/urgent-security-alert-fedora-41-and-rawhide-users\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"ContentText-BodyTextChunk ContentText-BodyTextChunk_link\" rel=\"noopener\">Red Hat<\/a><\/span><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\"> said in its advisory to &#8220;<\/span><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\"><span class=\"ContentText-BodyTextChunk ContentText-BodyTextChunk_bold\">PLEASE IMMEDIATELY STOP USAGE OF ANY FEDORA RAWHIDE INSTANCES<\/span><\/span><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\"> for work or personal activity&#8221; \u2014 emphasis theirs \u2014 until the company reverted its xz version to 5.4.x and gave the all-clear. The flaw has been assigned a CVSS (Common Vulnerability Scoring System) score of 10.0.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"ContentParagraph ContentParagraph_align_left\" data-testid=\"content-paragraph\"><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\">The flaw is present in <\/span><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\"><a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/tukaani-project\/xz\/releases\/tag\/v5.6.0\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"ContentText-BodyTextChunk ContentText-BodyTextChunk_link\" rel=\"noopener\">xz versions 5.6.0<\/a><\/span><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\"> (released Feb. 24) and 5.6.1 (released March 9). The US Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) <\/span><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cisa.gov\/news-events\/alerts\/2024\/03\/29\/reported-supply-chain-compromise-affecting-xz-utils-data-compression-library-cve-2024-3094\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"ContentText-BodyTextChunk ContentText-BodyTextChunk_link\" rel=\"noopener\">advised developers and users<\/a><\/span><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\"> to downgrade XZ Utils to an earlier, uncompromised version, such as <\/span><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\"><a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/tukaani-project\/xz\/releases\/tag\/v5.4.6\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"ContentText-BodyTextChunk ContentText-BodyTextChunk_link\" rel=\"noopener\">XZ Utils 5.4.6 Stable<\/a><\/span><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"ContentParagraph ContentParagraph_align_left\" data-testid=\"content-paragraph\"><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\">Here&#8217;s how to tell if the system is running the affected version:<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"ContentParagraph ContentParagraph_align_left\" data-testid=\"content-paragraph\"><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\"><span class=\"ContentText-BodyTextChunk ContentText-BodyTextChunk_italic\">xz &#8211;version<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"ContentParagraph ContentParagraph_align_left\" data-testid=\"content-paragraph\"><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\">If the output says <\/span><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\"><span class=\"ContentText-BodyTextChunk ContentText-BodyTextChunk_italic\">xz (XZ UTils) 5.6.1<\/span><\/span><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\"> or <\/span><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\"><span class=\"ContentText-BodyTextChunk ContentText-BodyTextChunk_italic\">liblzma 5.6.1<\/span><\/span><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\">, then users should either apply the update for their distribution (if available), downgrade xz, or disable ssh for the time being.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"ContentParagraph ContentParagraph_align_left\" data-testid=\"content-paragraph\"><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\">While the issue primarily affects Linux distributions, there are reports that some versions of MacOS may be running the compromised packages. If that is the case, running <\/span><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\"><span class=\"ContentText-BodyTextChunk ContentText-BodyTextChunk_italic\">brew upgrade<\/span><\/span><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\"> on the Mac should downgrade xz from 5.6.0 to 5.4.6.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_h2 ContentText_align_left\" data-testid=\"content-text\" id=\"Which Linux Distros Are Affected?\">Which Linux Distros Are Affected?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"ContentParagraph ContentParagraph_align_left\" data-testid=\"content-paragraph\"><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\">While serious, the impact may be limited. The problematic code is in the newer versions of xz\/liblzma, so it may not be as widely deployed. Linux distributions that have not yet released the newer versions are less likely to be affected.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"ContentParagraph ContentParagraph_align_left\" data-testid=\"content-paragraph\"><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\"><span class=\"ContentText-BodyTextChunk ContentText-BodyTextChunk_bold\">Red Hat:<\/span><\/span><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\"> Vulnerable packages are present in Fedora 41 and Fedora Rawhide. No versions of Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) are affected. Red Hat says users should immediately stop using the affected versions until the company has had a chance to change the xz version.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"ContentParagraph ContentParagraph_align_left\" data-testid=\"content-paragraph\"><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\"><span class=\"ContentText-BodyTextChunk ContentText-BodyTextChunk_bold\">SUSE:<\/span><\/span><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\"> An <\/span><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\"><a href=\"https:\/\/build.opensuse.org\/request\/show\/1163302\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"ContentText-BodyTextChunk ContentText-BodyTextChunk_link\" rel=\"noopener\">update is available<\/a><\/span><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\"> for openSUSE (Tumbleweed or MicroOS).<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"ContentParagraph ContentParagraph_align_left\" data-testid=\"content-paragraph\"><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\"><span class=\"ContentText-BodyTextChunk ContentText-BodyTextChunk_bold\">Debian Linux:<\/span><\/span><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\"> No stable versions of the distribution are affected, but compromised packages were part of the testing, unstable, and experimental versions. Users should <\/span><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\"><a href=\"https:\/\/lists.debian.org\/debian-security-announce\/2024\/msg00057.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"ContentText-BodyTextChunk ContentText-BodyTextChunk_link\" rel=\"noopener\">update xz-utils<\/a><\/span><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"ContentParagraph ContentParagraph_align_left\" data-testid=\"content-paragraph\"><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\"><span class=\"ContentText-BodyTextChunk ContentText-BodyTextChunk_bold\">Kali Linux<\/span><\/span><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\">: If systems were updated between March 26 and March 29, then users should <\/span><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\"><a href=\"https:\/\/infosec.exchange\/@kalilinux\/112180505434870941\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"ContentText-BodyTextChunk ContentText-BodyTextChunk_link\" rel=\"noopener\">update again to get the fix<\/a><\/span><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\">.
