(Photo by PAU BARRENA\/AFP via Getty Images) <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/header>\n<div class=\"single-article__content\">\n<div class=\"single-article__content-inner has-drop-cap\"> <html readability=\"20.47880041365\"><body readability=\"40.490395480226\"><\/p>\n<p>AT&T on Wednesday began the process of notifying more than 51 million people that their personal information, including social security numbers, were part of a massive dataset shared publicly last month, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/apps.web.maine.gov\/online\/aeviewer\/ME\/40\/3778e1fc-2ed5-461d-9cc5-df15c07f687c.shtml\">a filing with the Office of the Maine Attorney General<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>AT&T became aware March 26 that a large tranche of customer data had been released on the dark web on March 17, the company said in <a href=\"https:\/\/apps.web.maine.gov\/online\/aeviewer\/ME\/40\/3778e1fc-2ed5-461d-9cc5-df15c07f687c\/ef55bebb-fd3e-4ef8-8bef-42a097ae7963\/document.html'\">a template letter attached<\/a> to the filing in Maine. The data \u2014 dating back to June 2019 or earlier \u2014 varied by the individual and account, the company said, but could have included full name, email address, mailing address, phone number, social security number, date of birth, AT&T account number and AT&T passcode.<\/p>\n<p>The company said it reset users\u2019 four-digit passcodes, which are used as an additional layer of security to access a customer\u2019s account. The passcodes were stored in an encrypted format, but the encryption was easily deciphered, according to a security researcher who shared the<a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2024\/03\/30\/att-reset-account-passcodes-customer-data\/\"> information with TechCrunch for a story published on March 30<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The data includes information on roughly 7.6 million current customers and 65.4 million former account holders, the company said in<a href=\"https:\/\/www.att.com\/support\/article\/my-account\/000101995?bypasscache=1\/?source=EPcc000000000000U\"> a statement posted to its website<\/a> and updated Tuesday. AT&T reported in the Maine filing that 51,226,382 people were affected.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad ad--inline_1 \">\n<div class=\"ad__inner\"> <span class=\"screen-reader-text\">Advertisement<\/span> <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The company did not immediately respond to a question about the discrepancy between those figures.<\/p>\n<p>A dataset purporting to contain more than 70 million rows of AT&T customer data was offered for sale in 2021,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bleepingcomputer.com\/news\/security\/atandt-denies-data-breach-after-hacker-auctions-70-million-user-database\/\"> Bleeping Computer reported at the time<\/a>. Only a small sample of that data was released, and AT&T denied that it was company data.
