(Zhenjin Li\/Getty Images) <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/header>\n<div class=\"single-article__content\">\n<div class=\"single-article__content-inner has-drop-cap\"> <html readability=\"18.068552774755\"><body readability=\"35.806666666667\"><\/p>\n<p>Ascension, a health care system with 140 hospitals in 19 states and Washington, D.C., and tens of thousands of employees and affiliated providers, detected a \u201ccyber security event\u201d Wednesday that has caused a \u201cdisruption to clinical operations,\u201d the <a href=\"https:\/\/about.ascension.org\/news\/2024\/05\/network-interruption-update\">company said<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>Major impacts to medical services have been reported in multiple states, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kake.com\/story\/50762870\/cyberattack-disrupts-operations-at-major-us-healthcare-network\">Kansas<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pnj.com\/story\/news\/local\/pensacola\/2024\/05\/08\/ascension-hospitals-facing-cyberattack-in-florida-wisconsin\/73616546007\/\">Florida<\/a> and Michigan, including some patients being diverted to other hospitals and lack of access to digital records.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have to write everything on paper,\u201d one physician in Michigan <a href=\"https:\/\/www.freep.com\/story\/news\/health\/2024\/05\/09\/ascension-hospital-cyberattack-data-breach-hacked-michigan\/73620340007\/\">told the Detroit Free Press<\/a>. \u201cIt\u2019s like the 1980s or 1990s.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The attack comes as <a href=\"https:\/\/cyberscoop.com\/change-healthcare-attack-stolen-data-ransom-andrew-witty-unitedhealth\/\">lawmakers and federal regulators continue to grapple<\/a> with the fallout from the February attack on Change Healthcare, which has likely exposed private data on \u201ca substantial portion\u201d of Americans, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/cyberscoop.com\/stolen-change-healthcare-data-could-contain-information-on-a-substantial-portion-of-americans\/\">company estimates<\/a>. <\/p>\n<div class=\"ad ad--inline_1 \">\n<div class=\"ad__inner\"> <span class=\"screen-reader-text\">Advertisement<\/span> <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>That company admitted to paying $22 million to the ALPHV ransomware group before the group shuttered its site.
