(Photo by ANDREW CABALLERO-REYNOLDS \/ AFP) <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/header>\n<div class=\"single-article__content\">\n<div class=\"single-article__content-inner has-drop-cap\"> <html readability=\"31.588771729838\"><body readability=\"67.166556071666\"><\/p>\n<p>Leaders of the House Homeland Security Committee want Microsoft President Brad Smith to testify before their panel in the aftermath of accumulating cybersecurity incidents that have drawn ample negative attention to the tech giant.<\/p>\n<p>In particular, the committee is zeroing in on <a href=\"https:\/\/cyberscoop.com\/microsoft-csrb-china-hacking\/\">a Cyber Safety Review Board report<\/a> that faulted Microsoft for \u201ca cascade of security failures\u201d that abetted Chinese government-affiliated hackers\u2019 theft last summer of thousands of emails, including <a href=\"https:\/\/cyberscoop.com\/china-hackers-email-us-government\/\">those from federal agencies<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs a trusted provider of operating systems, cloud platforms, and productivity software for U.S. government agencies, including those within the U.S. intelligence community, Microsoft bears a profound responsibility to prioritize and implement effective cybersecurity measures,\u201d Chairman Mark Green, R-Tenn., and top panel Democrat Bennie Thompson of Mississippi wrote in a Thursday letter to Smith. <\/p>\n<p>The lawmakers continued: \u201cHowever, the CSRB report revealed that Microsoft has repeatedly failed to prevent substantial cyber intrusions, causing grave implications for the security and integrity of U.S. government data, networks, and information, and putting Americans \u2014 including U.S. government officials \u2014 at risk.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad ad--inline_1 \">\n<div class=\"ad__inner\"> <span class=\"screen-reader-text\">Advertisement<\/span> <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The panel plans a hearing on May 22.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile Microsoft\u2019s cooperation with the CSRB\u2019s investigation was encouraging, the numerous failures revealed in the report led to serious threats to our homeland and must be fully examined by this Committee,\u201d Green said in a written statement to CyberScoop. \u201cAmid ever-increasing cyber threats from China, Russia, Iran, and others, it is of paramount importance that a critical provider of operating systems, cloud platforms, and productivity software for the U.S. government can safeguard its systems and properly implement cybersecurity measures to prevent cyber intrusions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe believe recent events have undermined that trust and must be fully examined by this Committee,\u201d he continued. \u201cWe look forward to the company\u2019s cooperation as we work to increase the security and the resilience of our federal networks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Microsoft said it welcomed the discussion but didn\u2019t commit to the hearing date yet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re always committed to providing Congress with information that is important to the nation\u2019s security, and we look forward to discussing the specifics of the best time and way to do this,\u201d a Microsoft spokesperson said.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad ad--inline_1 \">\n<div class=\"ad__inner\"> <span class=\"screen-reader-text\">Advertisement<\/span> <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The incident described in the report isn\u2019t the only one to make headlines involving Microsoft and federal agencies. The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency <a href=\"https:\/\/cyberscoop.com\/federal-government-russian-breach-microsoft\/\">issued an emergency directive<\/a> to address another breach that occurred in January.<\/p>\n<p>With dismay over Microsoft\u2019s vulnerabilities growing in Washington, D.C., the company <a href=\"https:\/\/cyberscoop.com\/microsoft-security-organizational-changes\/\">announced organizational changes<\/a> designed to improve its security culture.
