(Photo by Anna Moneymaker\/Getty Images) <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/header>\n<div class=\"single-article__content\">\n<div class=\"single-article__content-inner has-drop-cap\"> <html readability=\"33.44482421875\"><body readability=\"68.364896073903\"><\/p>\n<p>Ahead of a Senate markup this week on a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rules.senate.gov\/hearings\/05\/08\/2024\/business-meeting\">trio of bills governing artificial intelligence in elections<\/a>, a bipartisan group of House lawmakers on Monday introduced companion legislation aimed at preparing election administrators for challenges posed by the technology.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/houlahan.house.gov\/uploadedfiles\/houlpa_101_xml.pdf\">Preparing Election Administrators for AI Act<\/a> from Reps. Chrissy Houlahan, D-Pa., Brian Fitzpatrick, R-Pa., Abigail Spanberger, D-Va., and Doug Lamborn, R-Colo., would require the Election Assistance Commission to team with the National Institute of Standards and Technology on a report that delivers voluntary guidelines for election administrators on the related risks and benefits of AI. <\/p>\n<p>Houlahan said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/houlahan.house.gov\/news\/documentsingle.aspx?DocumentID=4013\">press release<\/a> that the legislation \u2014 the House counterpart to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/118th-congress\/senate-bill\/3897\">March bill<\/a> from Sens. Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn., and Susan Collins, R-Maine \u2014 aims to \u201cstrengthen trust and confidence\u201d in the electoral system, something she called \u201ca shared responsibility that transcends party lines.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith the rise of artificial intelligence, we must equip our election administrators with the necessary tools and guidelines to safeguard our democratic process,\u201d Houlahan said in a press release. \u201cThis bipartisan bill underscores our commitment to fair and secure elections by addressing the potential risks posed by AI, including misinformation dissemination and cybersecurity threats.\u201d <\/p>\n<div class=\"ad ad--inline_1 \">\n<div class=\"ad__inner\"> <span class=\"screen-reader-text\">Advertisement<\/span> <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Given the <a href=\"https:\/\/cyberscoop.com\/lingo-life-biden-ai-robocall\/\">potential for AI-fueled trickery<\/a> in the administration of elections, Fitzpatrick said \u201cit is essential that state and local officials are prepared and provided with the resources to keep the election process secure,\u201d adding that Congress must keep working to \u201censure the public trust and the integrity of our elections are not compromised.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The bill calls on the EAC and NIST to deliver their report to Congress and state and local election offices within 60 days of its enactment. The report would also detail the cybersecurity risks of AI systems in elections.<\/p>\n<p>There are also callouts in the bill for the EAC and NIST to outline how election offices should respond to information generated and distributed by AI that compromises the sharing of accurate election information.
