(Pixelme Studios) <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/header>\n<div class=\"single-article__content\">\n<div class=\"single-article__content-inner has-drop-cap\"> <html readability=\"37.122194513716\"><body readability=\"76.564229536848\"><\/p>\n<p>Chris DeRusha is exiting his role as federal chief information security officer after more than three years on the job, the Office of Management and Budget confirmed Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>DeRusha, who was appointed to the federal CISO position in January 2021, played a <a href=\"https:\/\/fedscoop.com\/federal-ciso-chris-derusha-ai-procurement-ai-executive-order-guidance\/\">critical role in the development<\/a> of the White House\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/fedscoop.com\/biden-artificial-intelligence-ai-executive-order\/\">artificial intelligence executive order<\/a>, in addition to the <a href=\"https:\/\/fedscoop.com\/biden-cyber-executive-order-reignites-push-to-cloud-zero-trust\/\">Biden administration\u2019s 2021 executive order on cybersecurity<\/a> and the corresponding <a href=\"https:\/\/cyberscoop.com\/national-cybersecurity-strategy-chris-derusha\/\">national cybersecurity strategy and implementation plan<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cSince day one of the Biden Administration, Chris has been instrumental in strengthening our nation\u2019s cybersecurity, protecting America\u2019s critical infrastructure, and improving the digital defenses of the Federal government,\u201d Clare Martorana, federal chief information officer, said in a statement. \u201cI wish him the best, and know he will continue to serve as a leading voice within the cybersecurity community.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>As the federal CISO, DeRusha oversaw the 25-member council of his chief information security officer peers and spearheaded the protection of federal networks, while also managing agencywide implementation of multifactor authentication and supporting the coordination of the nation\u2019s broader cybersecurity as the deputy national cyber director. <\/p>\n<div class=\"ad ad--inline_1 \">\n<div class=\"ad__inner\"> <span class=\"screen-reader-text\">Advertisement<\/span> <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>DeRusha will also leave behind that role, the Office of the National Cyber Director confirmed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom the beginning of the Biden-Harris Administration, and even before, Chris DeRusha has been a steady, guiding leader,\u201d National Cyber Director Harry Coker Jr. said in a statement. \u201cAs Deputy National Cyber Director with ONCD \u2014 while continuing his excellent work as Federal CISO \u2014 he has been a trusted and valued partner. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cChris\u2019s keen insights, experience, and judgement have been integral to the work we\u2019ve done and what we will continue to do to strengthen our Nation\u2019s cyber infrastructure. I\u2019m grateful for his commitment to the American people and to the Biden-Harris Administration. All of us at ONCD wish him the very best in his next chapter,\u201d Coker added.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking during Scoop News Group\u2019s CyberTalks event last November, DeRusha touted the White House\u2019s coalition-building efforts and \u201cmeaningful cooperation\u201d as a means to reaching its overarching cybersecurity goals. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe cannot achieve any meaningful progress on managing cyber risk as one nation,\u201d DeRusha said. \u201cAnd this administration is definitely committed to working with our like-minded partners on shared goals.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad ad--inline_1 \">\n<div class=\"ad__inner\"> <span class=\"screen-reader-text\">Advertisement<\/span> <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>A month earlier, during the Google Public Sector Forum, DeRusha said that after \u201cdecades of investments in addressing legacy modernization challenges,\u201d the Biden administration was poised to address \u201cmassive\u201d long-term challenges on everything from AI strategy to combating ransomware. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve taken on pretty much every big challenge that we\u2019ve been talking about for a couple of decades,\u201d DeRusha said. \u201cAnd we\u2019re taking a swing and making\u201d progress.<\/p>\n<p>Prior to his current stint with the federal government, DeRusha served as CISO for the Biden presidential campaign and stayed on with the transition team\u2019s technology strategy and delivery unit.
