(Photo by Kevin Dietsch\/Getty Images) <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/header>\n<div class=\"single-article__content\">\n<div class=\"single-article__content-inner has-drop-cap\"> <html readability=\"33.008423757853\"><body readability=\"69.545514295104\"><\/p>\n<p>When Ivanti devices got hacked earlier this year, the company\u2019s participation in an industry-government collaboration gave the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency a \u201chead start\u201d toward confronting the vulnerability, the agency\u2019s director said Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>Cybersecurity firms linked the attack on Ivanti products at the start of 2024 to Chinese hackers, in a breach that ended up <a href=\"https:\/\/cyberscoop.com\/ivanti-linked-breach-of-cisa-potentially-affected-more-than-100000-individuals\/\">affecting CISA itself<\/a>. In April 2023, Ivanti joined the Joint Cyber Defense Collaborative \u2014 a project that has been <a href=\"https:\/\/cyberscoop.com\/cisa-jcdc-2024-priorities\/\">panned by some<\/a> and that CISA officials acknowledge has <a href=\"https:\/\/cyberscoop.com\/top-cisa-official-eric-goldstein-to-depart-agency-next-month\/\">room for improvement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat connectivity gave us a head start in working with you when we found out about the vulnerability in January,\u201d CISA Director Jen Easterly, who has led the agency since 2021, said at an event hosted by Ivanti. \u201cThere were some tough days\u201d early on with CISA, she said, but working with Ivanti and in the government to issue alerts shows how far the agency has come.<\/p>\n<p>Easterly also praised Ivanti for the cybersecurity commitments <a href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/security\/2024\/04\/ivanti-following-years-of-critical-vpn-exploits-pledges-new-era-of-security\/\">it announced last month<\/a> amid recurring security woes. Those \u201cincredibly encouraging\u201d pledges \u201cshould be a model for how other CEOs are embracing not just <a href=\"https:\/\/cyberscoop.com\/cisa-secure-by-design-commitments-tech-companies\/\">secure-by-design<\/a> principles, but also when we talk about corporate cyber responsibility,\u201d Easterly said.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad ad--inline_1 \">\n<div class=\"ad__inner\"> <span class=\"screen-reader-text\">Advertisement<\/span> <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The JCDC is all part of the ever-evolving, ever-discussed \u201cpublic-private partnership\u201d between government and the private sector.<\/p>\n<p>At the same Ivanti event, Easterly\u2019s predecessor, Chris Krebs, said the years of work to build up federal collaboration with industry are paying off, from the Joint Cyber Defense Collaborative to the National Risk Management Center \u2014 the \u201cproto\u201d version of the JCDC, he said \u2014 to the National Security Agency\u2019s Cybersecurity Collaboration Center.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re starting to see that these things work with the resources and time into it, but it\u2019s generating results and there\u2019s no better evidence of the results, I think, than when Russia invaded Ukraine, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/cyberscoop.com\/shields-up-easterly-inglis-op-ed\/\">\u2018Shields Up\u2019<\/a> campaign and the breadth to which that was able to change behavior in industry,\u201d said Krebs, now chief intelligence and public policy officer at SentinelOne. <\/p>\n<p>Also at the event, a top FBI official said Congress needed to renew liability protections for companies that share cyber threat data with the federal government before they expire next year.
