Yuichiro Chino via Getty <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/header>\n<div class=\"single-article__content\">\n<div class=\"single-article__content-inner has-drop-cap\"> <html readability=\"29.533650891211\"><body readability=\"62.667743092931\"><\/p>\n<p>A Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency initiative to enhance collaboration between government and industry should avoid policy distractions, establish a physical meeting space and create a \u201csmart Rolodex\u201d for identifying potential partners, according to a CISA advisory panel.<\/p>\n<p>CISA\u2019s Cybersecurity Advisory Committee on Wednesday <a href=\"https:\/\/business.cch.com\/CybersecurityPrivacy\/cisaadvisorycommitteereport.pdf\">adopted recommendations<\/a> for improving the Joint Cyber Defense Collaborative (JCDC), a three-year-old project to share cybersecurity data between government and the private sector that has faced persistent complaints among some that the initiative has featured <a href=\"https:\/\/cyberscoop.com\/cisa-dhs-easterly-cyber-mission\/\">lackluster information sharing<\/a>, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2024\/02\/06\/far-right-washington-private-hackers-00139413\">decline in participation<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/cyberscoop.com\/cisa-jcdc-2024-priorities\/\">organizational problems<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Before producing its recommendations, the advisory panel spoke to a \u201cgood subset\u201d of the more than 300 partners in the joint collaborative project, said Ron Green, chair of the subcommittee that produced the report and Mastercard\u2019s former chief security officer and a current fellow at the company.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOverwhelmingly there\u2019s full support of what the JCDC is doing,\u201d Green said. \u201cStakeholders did help provide us with some feedback to come up with our recommendations and it was generally more of a, \u2018what can we do to crank it to 10 or 11 from where we are now?\u2019 versus \u2018there\u2019s a lot of bad stuff going on here.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad ad--inline_1 \">\n<div class=\"ad__inner\"> <span class=\"screen-reader-text\">Advertisement<\/span> <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The three recommendations suggest that JCDC should focus on \u201coperational cyber defense\u201d \u2014 that is, collaboration that can assist on active or potential cyber incidents. \u201cSometimes it could be pulled into working on policy, which might not be the best for what the JCDC is,\u201d Green said.<\/p>\n<p>The people the advisory panel spoke to also said it would be good to have a physical meeting place to collaborate rather than just virtually, Green said, prompting the second recommendation to create such a space. <\/p>\n<p>And another key point of feedback was that JCDC is a good resource for figuring out how to get ahold of the most helpful companies in a given situation, he said, prompting the recommendation about creating a \u201csmart Rolodex.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>CISA Director Jen Easterly said at Wednesday\u2019s meeting that she welcomed the recommendations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI knew it was going to be hard and it will remain hard, simply off the back of the scale of the ambition,\u201d she said of the JCDC. \u201cWe\u2019re asking companies, some of whom are natural competitors, to come together and to share information.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad ad--inline_1 \">\n<div class=\"ad__inner\"> <span class=\"screen-reader-text\">Advertisement<\/span> <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re asking for companies who are used to working with the government just through government affairs, or through lawyers, to bring their technical and operational folks to the table,\u201d she continued. \u201cWe\u2019re asking for companies to not just respond to crisis but to actually do cyber defense planning on the most serious threats.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><\/body> <\/p>\n<footer class=\"single-article__footer\">\n<div class=\"author-card\" readability=\"7.7216117216117\">\n<div class=\"author-card__avatar\">\n<figure class=\"author-card__image-wrap\"> <img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"author-card__image\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ddi.mohflo.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/panel-advises-cisa-on-how-to-improve-industry-government-collaboration-project-1.jpg?w=640&ssl=1\" alt=\"Tim Starks\"> <\/figure>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"author-card__details\" readability=\"10.901098901099\">\n<h4 class=\"author-card__name\">Written by Tim Starks<\/h4>\n<p> Tim Starks is senior reporter at CyberScoop.
