(Scoop News Group photo) <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/header>\n<div class=\"single-article__content\">\n<div class=\"single-article__content-inner has-drop-cap\"> <html readability=\"26.505381035486\"><body readability=\"54.62962962963\"><\/p>\n<p>Chris DeRusha, the former federal chief information security officer and deputy national cyber director, is joining Google Cloud to lead the tech giant\u2019s global public sector compliance work, according to a Tuesday press release.<\/p>\n<p>DeRusha, who <a href=\"https:\/\/fedscoop.com\/chris-derusha-leaving-federal-ciso-omb-oncd\/\">left the federal government last month<\/a> after more than three years as the federal CISO, will lead the expansion of Google Cloud\u2019s suite of artificial intelligence, cloud computing and security products within the public sector, both in the United States and abroad.<\/p>\n<p>DeRusha will report to Jeanette Manfra, Google Cloud\u2019s global director of security and compliance, who said in a statement that the ONCD veteran\u2019s \u201cunparalleled experience designing and implementing cutting-edge security and critical infrastructure programs in both the private and public sectors will be invaluable to our Google Cloud team and our global public sector customers.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Manfra, who previously served in the Department of Homeland Security and as the White House\u2019s director for critical infrastructure cybersecurity, added that DeRusha\u2019s experience in the federal government provides him with \u201ca unique vantage point into national security challenges facing governments and specific industry sectors.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad ad--inline_1 \">\n<div class=\"ad__inner\"> <span class=\"screen-reader-text\">Advertisement<\/span> <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>During his time as federal CISO, DeRusha played a <a href=\"https:\/\/fedscoop.com\/federal-ciso-chris-derusha-ai-procurement-ai-executive-order-guidance\/\">key role in the development<\/a> of the White House\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/fedscoop.com\/biden-artificial-intelligence-ai-executive-order\/\">artificial intelligence executive order<\/a>, as well as the <a href=\"https:\/\/fedscoop.com\/biden-cyber-executive-order-reignites-push-to-cloud-zero-trust\/\">Biden administration\u2019s 2021 EO on cybersecurity<\/a> and the subsequent <a href=\"https:\/\/cyberscoop.com\/national-cybersecurity-strategy-chris-derusha\/\">national cybersecurity strategy and implementation plan<\/a>. He also led the 25-member council of agency CISOs, oversaw agencywide implementation of multifactor authentication and coordinated broader federal cybersecurity strategies in his role at ONCD.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking at the Google Public Sector Forum last October, DeRusha said that the Biden administration was embracing the shift from addressing legacy modernization issues to taking on \u201cmassive\u201d long-term challenges on everything from AI strategy to battling ransomware.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve taken on pretty much every big challenge that we\u2019ve been talking about for a couple of decades,\u201d DeRusha said. \u201cAnd we\u2019re taking a swing and making\u201d progress.<\/p>\n<p>DeRusha\u2019s move to Google Cloud represents a return to the private sector for the first time since 2018, when he spent a year as Ford Motor Company\u2019s manager of enterprise vulnerability management and application security.
