(MANDEL NGAN\/AFP via Getty Images) <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/header>\n<div class=\"single-article__content\">\n<div class=\"single-article__content-inner has-drop-cap\"> <html readability=\"30.05081796032\"><body readability=\"60.809667673716\"><\/p>\n<p>An established cybercrime group with a track record of attacking political targets posted on Tuesday roughly two gigabytes of data from the Heritage Foundation, a prominent conservative think tank based in Washington, D.C.<\/p>\n<p>Self-described \u201cgay furry hackers,\u201d SiegedSec said it released the data in response to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.heritage.org\/conservatism\/commentary\/project-2025\">Heritage Foundation\u2019s Project 2025<\/a>, a set of proposals that aim to give Donald Trump a set of ready-made policies to implement if he wins this fall\u2019s election. Its authors describe it as an initiative \u201cto lay the groundwork for a White House more friendly to the right.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The data, reviewed by CyberScoop, includes Heritage Foundation blogs and material related to The Daily Signal, a right-wing media site affiliated with Heritage. The data was created between 2007 and November 2022. <\/p>\n<p>The group says it gained access to the data on July 2 and released it to provide \u201ctransparency to the public regarding who exactly is supporting heritage (sic),\u201d a spokesperson for the group who goes by the online handle \u201cvio\u201d told CyberScoop in an online chat Tuesday.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad ad--inline_1 \">\n<div class=\"ad__inner\"> <span class=\"screen-reader-text\">Advertisement<\/span> <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The data includes the \u201cfull names, email addresses, passwords, and usernames\u201d of people associating with Heritage, vio said, including users with U.S. government email addresses. \u201cThis itself can have an impact to heritage\u2019s (sic) reputation,\u201d they added, \u201cand it\u2019ll especially push away users in positions of power.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>SiegedSec also claimed to be in possession of more than 200 gigabytes of additional \u201cmostly useless\u201d data, which the group said won\u2019t be released.<\/p>\n<p>The attack was carried out as part of SiegedSec\u2019s \u201cOpTransRights,\u201d campaign, which <a href=\"https:\/\/cyberscoop.com\/siegedsec-hack-transition-bans-satellite-systems\/\">has previously included<\/a> the defacement of government websites and data theft from states either considering or implementing anti-abortion or anti-trans legislation.<\/p>\n<p>The Heritage Foundation did not respond to a request for comment Tuesday. The attack marks the second suffered by Heritage this year. In April, a Heritage official <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2024\/04\/12\/heritage-foundation-cyberattack\/?guccounter=1\">told Politico<\/a> that the think tank had shut down its network in response to a breach by a nation-state hacking group.<\/p>\n<p>Democrats have sought to tie Trump to Project 2025 proposals as an example of what to expect from his second term.
