(Photo by Mauro PIMENTEL \/ AFP) <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/header>\n<div class=\"single-article__content\">\n<div class=\"single-article__content-inner has-drop-cap\"> <html readability=\"35.272277227723\"><body readability=\"71.018835616438\"><\/p>\n<p>The Grand Palais R\u00e9union des mus\u00e9es nationaux, a major cultural venue in Paris and host to several Olympic events, suffered a cyberattack over the weekend that authorities said did not result in lasting damage, contrary to press reports that venue data was encrypted as part of a ransomware attack.<\/p>\n<p>French news outlet Le Parisien reported Monday that unnamed attackers encrypted financial data associated with the venue, including the Louvre, and are holding it ransom. Matthias Grolier, the Louvre\u2019s director, said Tuesday in <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/MatthiasGrolier\/status\/1820721589106725088\">a post on X <\/a>that \u201ccontrary\u201d to those reports, the Louvre was not targeted with ransomware. \u201cSolidarity with our colleagues who are victims of this attack,\u201d Grolier said, according to a machine translation from French.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/presse.rmngp.fr\/le-grandpalaisrmn-vise-par-une-cyberattaque\/\">a press release issued by the Grand Palais<\/a>, a \u201ccyberattack\u201d hit the venue the night of August 3 into the morning of August 4, and France\u2019s cybersecurity agency, the ANSSI, was notified immediately \u201cto analyze the situation and restore our networks.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo date, no data extraction has been detected,\u201d the venue said in the statement. <\/p>\n<div class=\"ad ad--inline_1 \">\n<div class=\"ad__inner\"> <span class=\"screen-reader-text\">Advertisement<\/span> <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>A spokesperson for the ANSSI told CyberScoop on Tuesday that the agency provided assistance to the Grand Palais. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe incident does not affect information systems involved in the holding of the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games,\u201d the spokesperson said.<\/p>\n<p>Neither the venue nor the ANSSI immediately responded to questions with more detail about the nature of the attack or whether there was a ransomware or encryption component. <\/p>\n<p>Cybersecurity experts warned that the Paris Olympic Games were <a href=\"https:\/\/cyberscoop.com\/russia-tom-cruise-ai-paris-olympics\/\">an obvious target for cyberattacks<\/a> given its high-profile nature and current global geopolitical events. Researchers with Recorded Future\u2019s Insikt Group, for instance, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.recordedfuture.com\/research\/hurdling-over-hazards-multifaceted-threats-to-the-2024-paris-olympics\">said in June<\/a> that hacktivists would likely attempt cyber disruptions to protest support for Ukraine and Israel, and that organizations \u201cshould prepare for increased DDoS activity, website defacements, and potential wiper malware disguised as ransomware.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>State-sponsored cyber disruptions were likely to be more \u201crestrained due to France\u2019s NATO membership,\u201d the researchers said, but cyber espionage was likely to escalate using Olympic-themed lures.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad ad--inline_1 \">\n<div class=\"ad__inner\"> <span class=\"screen-reader-text\">Advertisement<\/span> <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Microsoft\u2019s Threat Intelligence Center <a href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/security\/security-insider\/intelligence-reports\/how-russia-is-trying-to-disrupt-the-2024-paris-olympic-games\">also warned in June<\/a> of a \u201cnetwork of Russia-affiliated actors pursuing a range of malign influence campaigns against France, French President Emmanuel Marcon [sic], the International Olympic Committee (IOC), and the Paris Games.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Russia has a history of maligning the Olympics, Microsoft researchers said, and had been linked to past cyber-enabled attacks on the World Anti-Doping Agency and a destructive attack against the 2018 Winter Olympics.<\/p>\n<p>French infrastructure has suffered some physical sabotage coinciding with the Olympics, including cuts of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/sports\/olympics\/2024\/07\/26\/french-train-network-attack-olympics\/74554316007\/\">rail-related cables<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/saboteurs-cut-internet-cables-in-latest-disruption-during-paris-olympics\/\">fiber optic cables<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p><\/body> <\/p>\n<footer class=\"single-article__footer\" readability=\"1.2785714285714\">\n<div class=\"author-card\" readability=\"8\">\n<div class=\"author-card__avatar\">\n<figure class=\"author-card__image-wrap\"> <img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"author-card__image\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ddi.mohflo.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/french-olympic-venue-and-cultural-site-targeted-in-cyberattack-1.jpg?w=640&ssl=1\" alt=\"AJ Vicens\"> <\/figure>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><h4 class=\"author-card__name\">Written by AJ Vicens<\/h4>\n<p> AJ covers nation-state threats and cybercrime.
