Since then, it has deployed multiple malware tools, including the well-known <\/span><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\"><a class=\"ContentText-BodyTextChunk ContentText-BodyTextChunk_link\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.darkreading.com\/cyberattacks-data-breaches\/shadowpad-threat-actor-dll-sideloading-espionage\" rel=\"noopener\">ShadowPad remote access Trojan<\/a><\/span><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\"> (RAT), the <\/span><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\"><a class=\"ContentText-BodyTextChunk ContentText-BodyTextChunk_link\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.darkreading.com\/cyberattacks-data-breaches\/ukrainian-systems-hit-by-cobalt-strike-via-a-malicious-excel-file\" rel=\"noopener\">Cobalt Strike post compromise tool<\/a><\/span><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\">, and a custom loader for injecting malware using a 2018 Windows remote code execution vulnerability (<\/span><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\"><a class=\"ContentText-BodyTextChunk ContentText-BodyTextChunk_link\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/msrc.microsoft.com\/update-guide\/en-US\/advisory\/CVE-2018-0824\" rel=\"noopener\">CVE-2018-0824<\/a><\/span><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\">).<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"ContentParagraph ContentParagraph_align_left\" data-testid=\"content-paragraph\"><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\">APT41 is an attribution that several vendors use to track a loose collective of China-nexus threat groups that have been engaged in a broad range of cyber espionage and financially motivated cyberattacks around the world, going back to 2012. Members of the group such as <\/span><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\"><a class=\"ContentText-BodyTextChunk ContentText-BodyTextChunk_link\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.darkreading.com\/threat-intelligence\/sidewalk-malware-tied-to-china-linked-espionage-group\" rel=\"noopener\">Wicked Panda<\/a><\/span><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\">,&nbsp;<\/span><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\"><a class=\"ContentText-BodyTextChunk ContentText-BodyTextChunk_link\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.darkreading.com\/ics-ot-security\/chinas-winnti-apt-compromises-national-grid-in-asia-for-6-months\" rel=\"noopener\">Winnti<\/a><\/span><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\">, <\/span><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\"><a class=\"ContentText-BodyTextChunk ContentText-BodyTextChunk_link\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.darkreading.com\/threat-intelligence\/china-s-apt41-linked-wyrmspy-dragonegg-mobile-spyware\" rel=\"noopener\">Barium<\/a><\/span><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\">, and SuckFly have plundered and pillaged trade secrets, intellectual property, and other sensitive data from organizations in the US and multiple other countries in recent years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"ContentParagraph ContentParagraph_align_left\" data-testid=\"content-paragraph\"><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\">Most recently, <\/span><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\"><a class=\"ContentText-BodyTextChunk ContentText-BodyTextChunk_link\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.darkreading.com\/threat-intelligence\/china-apt41-targets-global-logistics-utilities\" rel=\"noopener\">Mandiant reported observing<\/a><\/span><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\"> members of the group targeting global shipping and logistics companies and organizations in the technology, entertainment, and automotive sectors. The US government <\/span><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\"><a class=\"ContentText-BodyTextChunk ContentText-BodyTextChunk_link\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.darkreading.com\/threat-intelligence\/us-charges-five-members-of-china-linked-apt41-for-global-attacks\" rel=\"noopener\">indicted several members<\/a><\/span><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\"> of the Chengdu-based APT41 in 2020, though that has done little slow it down.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_h2 ContentText_align_left\" data-testid=\"content-text\" id=\"Academic Research: A Valuable Cyber Target\">Academic Research: A Valuable Cyber Target<\/h2>\n<p class=\"ContentParagraph ContentParagraph_align_left\" data-testid=\"content-paragraph\"><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\">Researchers at Cisco Talos discovered the intrusion when investigating abnormal activity involving attempts to download and execute PowerShell scripts in the Taiwan research institute&#8217;s network environment last year. &nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"ContentParagraph ContentParagraph_align_left\" data-testid=\"content-paragraph\"><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\">&#8220;The nature of research-and-development work carried out by the entity makes it a valuable target for threat actors dedicated to obtaining proprietary and sensitive technologies of interest to them,&#8221; Talos researchers Joey Chen, Ashley Shen, and Vitor Ventura <\/span><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\"><a class=\"ContentText-BodyTextChunk ContentText-BodyTextChunk_link\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/blog.talosintelligence.com\/chinese-hacking-group-apt41-compromised-taiwanese-government-affiliated-research-institute-with-shadowpad-and-cobaltstrike-2\/?&amp;web_view=true\" rel=\"noopener\">said in a report this week<\/a><\/span><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\">. Over the course of the intrusion, APT41 actors broke into three systems in the target environment and stole at least some documents from there, they said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"ContentParagraph ContentParagraph_align_left\" data-testid=\"content-paragraph\"><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\">ShadowPad is malware that researchers first discovered embedded in the <\/span><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\"><a class=\"ContentText-BodyTextChunk ContentText-BodyTextChunk_link\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/securelist.com\/shadowpad-in-corporate-networks\/81432\/\" rel=\"noopener\">source code of NetSarang Computer&#8217;s Xmanager<\/a><\/span><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\"> server management software back in 2017. That supply chain attack <\/span><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\"><a class=\"ContentText-BodyTextChunk ContentText-BodyTextChunk_link\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.darkreading.com\/application-security\/server-management-software-discovered-harboring-backdoor\" rel=\"noopener\">impacted several NetSarang customers<\/a><\/span><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\"> in the APAC region. Initially, researchers believed that APT41 was the sole user of the backdoor. Over the years however, they have <\/span><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\"><a class=\"ContentText-BodyTextChunk ContentText-BodyTextChunk_link\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.darkreading.com\/threat-intelligence\/shadowpad-malware-platform-proves-a-threat-to-watch\" rel=\"noopener\">identified multiple groups<\/a><\/span><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\"> \u2014 all of them China-linked \u2014 that have used the RAT in numerous cyber-espionage campaigns and software supply chain attacks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"ContentParagraph ContentParagraph_align_left\" data-testid=\"content-paragraph\"><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\">With the attack on the Taiwanese research institute, APT41 used two different ShadowPad iterations \u2014 one that leveraged a previously known packing mechanism called &#8220;<\/span><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\"><a class=\"ContentText-BodyTextChunk ContentText-BodyTextChunk_link\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pwc.co.uk\/issues\/cyber-security-services\/research\/chasing-shadows.html\" rel=\"noopener\">ScatterBee,<\/a><\/span><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\">&#8221; and another that used an outdated and vulnerable version of <\/span><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\"><a class=\"ContentText-BodyTextChunk ContentText-BodyTextChunk_link\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/learn.microsoft.com\/en-us\/security-updates\/securitybulletins\/2013\/ms13-075\" rel=\"noopener\">Microsoft Input Method Editors<\/a><\/span><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\"> (IME), the Cisco Talos researchers said.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_h2 ContentText_align_left\" data-testid=\"content-text\" id=\"ShadowPad &amp; Cobalt Strike Anchor Espionage Effort\">ShadowPad &amp; Cobalt Strike Anchor Espionage Effort<\/h2>\n<p class=\"ContentParagraph ContentParagraph_align_left\" data-testid=\"content-paragraph\"><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\">The attackers used ShadowPad to run commands for mapping out the victim network, collecting data on hosts, and trying to find other exploitable systems on the same network. Cisco Talos also found the APT harvesting passwords and user credentials stored in Web browsers from the compromised environment, using tools such as Mimikatz and WebBrowserPassView.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"ContentParagraph ContentParagraph_align_left\" data-testid=\"content-paragraph\"><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\">&#8220;From the environment the actor executes several commands, including using &#8216;net,&#8217; &#8216;whoami,&#8217; &#8216;quser,&#8217; &#8216;ipconfig,&#8217; &#8216;netstat,&#8217; and &#8216;dir&#8217; commands to obtain information on user accounts, directory structure, and network configurations from the compromised systems,&#8221; the researchers said. &#8220;In addition, we also observed query to the registry key to get the current state of software inventory collection on the system.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"ContentParagraph ContentParagraph_align_left\" data-testid=\"content-paragraph\"><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\">As part of their attack chain, the threat actors also deployed the Cobalt Strike post compromise tool on the victim network using a loader they cloned from a GitHub project.
