(Getty Images) <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/header>\n<div class=\"single-article__content\">\n<div class=\"single-article__content-inner has-drop-cap\"> <html readability=\"22.554820415879\"><body readability=\"46.444589308996\"><\/p>\n<p>The Federal Aviation Administration this week will formally propose cybersecurity mandates for future manufactured aircraft and equipment like engines and propellers, according to a post in the Federal Register.<\/p>\n<p>The proposed rulemaking <a href=\"https:\/\/www.federalregister.gov\/public-inspection\/2024-17916\/equipment-systems-and-network-information-security-protection\">set to be published Wednesday<\/a> will add new cybersecurity requirements to the \u201cairworthiness\u201d of a newly built plane. The Biden administration has made cyber mandates for critical infrastructure sectors a priority through the <a href=\"https:\/\/cyberscoop.com\/biden-national-cybersecurity-strategy-2023\/\">national cybersecurity strategy<\/a>, which served as an acknowledgment that relying on voluntary measures did not lead to increased security.<\/p>\n<p>The new proposal is aimed at standardizing \u201cthe FAA\u2019s criteria for addressing cybersecurity threats, reducing certification costs and time while maintaining the same level of safety,\u201d according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/public-inspection.federalregister.gov\/2024-17916.pdf\">document<\/a>. The FAA said the rules are in line with current cyber standards.<\/p>\n<p>Specifically, the new rules take aim at the \u201cequipment, systems, and networks of transport category airplanes, engines, and propellers\u201d that require connected, digital components that can be hacked. The FAA warned that industry trends of increasing connectivity could introduce vulnerabilities to airplanes from new sources, such as maintenance laptops or airline gate link networks.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad ad--inline_1 \">\n<div class=\"ad__inner\"> <span class=\"screen-reader-text\">Advertisement<\/span> <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The proposal is also aimed at \u201charmonizing\u201d existing regulations in an effort to reduce costs and the time needed to approve new or changed equipment. Cyber regulatory harmonization, which aims to dial down the red tape of certain critical infrastructure sectors, is one of the White House\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/cyberscoop.com\/cybersecurity-strategy-harmonization-critical-infrastructure\/\">policy proposals<\/a> widely <a href=\"https:\/\/cyberscoop.com\/hearing-cyber-regulations-harmonization\/\">embraced by industry<\/a>. Harmonization could reduce costs for organizations that operate in more than one sector.<\/p>\n<p>The FAA said the existing rules \u201care neither standardized between projects nor harmonized\u201d between varying authorities.<\/p>\n<p>The agency said any new designs should take into account and mitigate cyber threats.. The proposal, however, does not apply to physical electronic attacks like signal <a href=\"https:\/\/gpsjam.org\/\">jamming<\/a> that has been an increasing issue in areas close to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/politics\/pentagon-russia-arctic-gps-jamming-1.7274182\">war zones<\/a>. Existing planes and equipment also do not have to follow the proposed rule.<\/p>\n<p>Public comments are due 60 days after official publication on the Federal Register.
