In the modern world, nations are increasingly turning to social media and the internet to conduct counterintelligence and identify potential spies.<\/p>\n<p>According to new <a href=\"https:\/\/cloud.google.com\/blog\/topics\/threat-intelligence\/uncovering-iranian-counterintelligence-operation\">research<\/a> from Mandiant and Google Cloud, an Iranian hacking group has been observed using disguised social media personas to spread and share fake job recruitment websites, employment offers and other content lures to unsuspecting victims.<\/p>\n<p>The content was posted on platforms like X and Virasty \u2014 an Iranian alternative to Twitter\/X \u2014 and people posing as Israeli headhunters or human resource employees directed users to job recruitment sites written in Farsi, the official language of Iran. Those who clicked were asked to provide personal details, such as their name, date of birth and home address, as well as information on their professional or academic backgrounds. That information was promptly sent to attackers.<\/p>\n<p>The operation, first spotted in 2017 and last seen active in March 2024, appears primarily to be helping the Iranian government identify Iranians potentially cooperating with foreign adversaries, including Israel.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad ad--inline_1 \">\n<div class=\"ad__inner\"> <span class=\"screen-reader-text\">Advertisement<\/span> <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cThe data collected by this campaign may support the Iranian intelligence apparatus in pinpointing individuals who are interested in collaborating with Iran\u2019s perceived adversarial countries,\u201d wrote authors Ofir Rozmann, Asli Koksal and Sarah Bock. \u201cThe collected data may be leveraged to uncover human intelligence operations conducted against Iran and to persecute any Iranians suspected to be involved in these operations.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ddi.mohflo.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/iranian-hackers-using-social-media-job-recruitment-sites-to-lure-israeli-spies.png?w=640&ssl=1\" alt><\/figure>\n<p><em>A post by social media persona <\/em><em>@A_Soleimani_Far<\/em><em> advertising a social engineering lure disguised as a job recruitment website on Virasity. [Source: Mandiant]<\/em><\/p>\n<div class=\"ad ad--inline_1 \">\n<div class=\"ad__inner\"> <span class=\"screen-reader-text\">Advertisement<\/span> <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The decoy recruitment sites specifically advertised the need for individuals with background or experience in IT and cybersecurity, as well as \u201cemployees and officers of Iran\u2019s intelligence and security services,\u201d while offering \u201cexcellent\u201d pay and promising to protect the individual\u2019s privacy.<\/p>\n<p>Ben Read, head of Mandiant\u2019s cyber espionage analysis, told CyberScoop that while the threat intel firm lack specifics on the number of individuals affected, the operation\u2019s seven-year duration indicates that \u201cpresumably they\u2019re having some success.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ddi.mohflo.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/iranian-hackers-using-social-media-job-recruitment-sites-to-lure-israeli-spies-2.png?w=640&ssl=1\" alt><\/figure>\n<p><em>Desktop and mobile versions of decoy job recruitment website beparas[.]com used in February 2024. [Source: Mandiant]<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Mandiant assessed with high confidence that the operation was carried out at the behest of the Iranian government, with researchers noting a \u201cweak overlap\u201d with activity linked to APT42, a group <a href=\"https:\/\/cyberscoop.com\/iran-trump-campaign-hack-odni-statement\/\">accused by U.S. officials<\/a> of targeting and spearphishing the Trump and Harris presidential campaigns.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad ad--inline_1 \">\n<div class=\"ad__inner\"> <span class=\"screen-reader-text\">Advertisement<\/span> <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>But Read said this operation appears distinct from other APT42 operations. While it may share training or leadership with the APT group, it uses separate IT infrastructure, which leads Mandiant to believe it\u2019s a separate entity. This activity is also unrelated to the U.S. elections and strictly focused on gathering counterintelligence on domestic actors and Farsi-speaking dissidents living abroad.<\/p>\n<p>Tehran\u2019s focus on uncovering Israeli collaborators stems from a decade of Israeli intelligence successes within<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rferl.org\/a\/israel-iran-assassinations-commanders-abroad-strategy\/32903048.html\"> Iranian borders and neighboring territories<\/a>. That includes a string of assassinations of Iranian and Revolutionary Guard leaders and<a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/mossad-killed-irans-top-nuke-scientist-with-remote-operated-machine-gun-nyt\/\"> nuclear scientists<\/a>, and Mossad\u2019s 2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/07\/15\/us\/politics\/iran-israel-mossad-nuclear.html\"> theft<\/a> of nuclear program documents.<\/p>\n<p>More recently, Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/middle-east\/hamas-chief-ismail-haniyeh-killed-iran-hamas-says-statement-2024-07-31\/\"> was killed<\/a> in a missile strike in Tehran after attending Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian\u2019s swearing-in ceremony.
