(Getty Images) <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/header>\n<div class=\"single-article__content\">\n<div class=\"single-article__content-inner has-drop-cap\"> <html readability=\"21.278342749529\"><body readability=\"43.348927038627\"><\/p>\n<p>The Department of Commerce took another step Monday in its push to scrutinize supply chains by proposing a ban on Chinese and Russian components deemed a national security threat from connected and automated vehicles.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/statements-releases\/2024\/09\/23\/fact-sheet-protecting-america-from-connected-vehicle-technology-from-countries-of-concern\/\">White House and Commerce Department<\/a> are looking for comments on a rule that would prohibit the sale or importation of vehicles outfitted with many of the cameras and sensors that are common today.<\/p>\n<p>Specifically, the ban would apply to the parts needed for \u201cvehicle connectivity systems\u201d \u2014 like Bluetooth, cellular service, or Wi-Fi \u2014 and comes amid growing concerns that digital conveniences have also created a highly connected playground rife with <a href=\"https:\/\/cyberscoop.com\/ftc-report-streaming-social-media-surveillance-privacy\/\">mass surveillance<\/a> and malicious hacking.<\/p>\n<p>Many vehicles on the road are considered <a href=\"https:\/\/therecord.media\/car-data-privacy-service-wiping\">computers on wheels<\/a> more than mechanical hunks of steel, and the automobile industry is as much software as a transportation sector. Additionally, rising tensions with China after years of subsidized industrial manufacturing that dominated certain American markets has put national security circles in Washington on high alert.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad ad--inline_1 \">\n<div class=\"ad__inner\"> <span class=\"screen-reader-text\">Advertisement<\/span> <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cThe Biden-Harris Administration is focused on comprehensively addressing the threats caused by foreign automobiles and supply chains. In May of this year, President Biden directed an increase from 25% to 100% on the tariff rate on Chinese electric vehicles under Section 301,\u201d the White House said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>The White House has shown increasing attention on electric vehicles, as many Chinese components or EVs made in China are considered higher quality compared to Western counterparts \u2014 though tariffs have staved off widespread adoption of Chinese EVs in the U.S. In May, the administration <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/statements-releases\/2024\/05\/14\/fact-sheet-president-biden-takes-action-to-protect-american-workers-and-businesses-from-chinas-unfair-trade-practices\/\">drastically increased tariffs<\/a> on electric vehicles from China.<\/p>\n<p>The proposed ban would restrict software from vehicles from the model year 2027 and hardware from the model year 2030. The model year can often be different from the year of release.<\/p>\n<p>The Commerce Department first <a href=\"https:\/\/cyberscoop.com\/commerce-china-connected-vehicles\/\">announced an investigation and a call for comments<\/a> around the national security risks associated with connected cars in February.
