(Photo by Anna Moneymaker\/Getty Images) <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/header>\n<div class=\"single-article__content\">\n<div class=\"single-article__content-inner has-drop-cap\"> <html readability=\"36.41139636819\"><body readability=\"75.683720930233\"><\/p>\n<p>A CrowdStrike executive apologized Tuesday over a faulty update that caused a massive IT outage two months ago, saying the company has taken steps to make sure it can\u2019t happen again.<\/p>\n<p>The history-making <a href=\"https:\/\/cyberscoop.com\/crowdstrike-falcon-flaw-microsoft-outage-flights-grounded-windows\/\">July 19 problem<\/a> involved new threat detection configurations for CrowdStrike\u2019s Falcon security platform that were sent to sensors running on Microsoft Windows devices that the Falcon sensor\u2019s rules engine did not understand, Adam Meyers, the company\u2019s senior vice president of counter adversary operations, testified to the House Homeland Security panel\u2019s cybersecurity subcommittee.<\/p>\n<p>Essentially, it was like trying to move a chess piece where there wasn\u2019t a square, Meyers explained. Approximately 8.5 million systems crashed as a result, leading to billions of dollars worth of losses.<\/p>\n<p>In response, CrowdStrike has introduced new validation checks, enhanced testing procedures, additional controls for customers, gradual rollout across increasing rings of deployment, more runtime checks and third-party reviews, Meyers told the subcommittee.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad ad--inline_1 \">\n<div class=\"ad__inner\"> <span class=\"screen-reader-text\">Advertisement<\/span> <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cWe let our customers down,\u201d he said. \u201cOn behalf of everyone at CrowdStrike I want to apologize. We are deeply sorry and we are determined to prevent this from ever happening again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lawmakers largely struck a sympathetic tone with Meyers, approving of how the company responded in the aftermath. But they said they, too, wanted to avoid any repeats.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe largest IT outage in history was due to a mistake,\u201d said committee Chair Mark Green, R-Tenn., comparing it to a catastrophe straight out of a movie. \u201cMistakes can happen. However, we can\u2019t allow a mistake of this magnitude to happen again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Meyers emphasized that the incident didn\u2019t involve a cyberattack, and that artificial intelligence played no role in sending the faulty update. <a href=\"https:\/\/cyberscoop.com\/low-level-cybercriminals-are-pouncing-on-crowdstrike-connected-outage\/\">The incident<\/a> did have further <a href=\"https:\/\/cyberscoop.com\/easterly-crowdstrike-china-volt-typhoon\/\">cyber implications<\/a>, however.<\/p>\n<p>Rep. Andrew Garbarino, R-N.Y., who chairs the cyber subcommittee, asked why federal agencies were impacted by the updates and whether there were different updates to test for commercial versus <a href=\"https:\/\/fedscoop.com\/federal-government-agencies-affected-by-worldwide-it-outage\/\">government clients<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad ad--inline_1 \">\n<div class=\"ad__inner\"> <span class=\"screen-reader-text\">Advertisement<\/span> <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The updates went to Microsoft Windows operating sensors regardless of which system was running on a given device, Meyers answered.<\/p>\n<p>Even if lawmakers indicated a sense of understanding on CrowdStrike\u2019s behalf, others have proven more antagonistic, particularly Delta Airlines, which has <a href=\"https:\/\/cyberscoop.com\/crowdstrike-points-finger-back-at-delta-after-airline-threatened-to-sue-over-outages\/\">threatened a lawsuit<\/a> against the cyber giant. <\/p>\n<p>Meyers said it has worked to aid customers affected by the outage and will do whatever it has to do to make them feel comfortable working with CrowdStrike again.
