David Ake\/Getty Images) <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/header>\n<div class=\"single-article__content\">\n<div class=\"single-article__content-inner has-drop-cap\"> <html readability=\"33.068707725169\"><body readability=\"67.173913043478\"><\/p>\n<p>The U.S. government on Thursday announced sweeping actions against two Russian nationals for their alleged role in facilitating all manner of cybercrime through money laundering and operating multiple payment and exchanges services used by criminals. <\/p>\n<p>Sergey Ivanov, known online as \u201cTaleon,\u201d and Timur Shakhmametov, known as both \u201cJokerStash\u201d and \u201cVega,\u201d facilitated money laundering tied to darknet drug trafficking and ransomware, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/opa\/pr\/two-russian-nationals-charged-connection-operating-billion-dollar-money-laundering-1\">U.S. Department of Justice said in a statement<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>Ivanov created and operated Russian payment exchange services UAPS, PinPays and PM2BTC, which collectively facilitated tens of millions of dollars in financial activity linked to fraud, ransomware and darknet drug markets, the agency said.<\/p>\n<p>Ivanov was charged with one count of conspiracy to commit and aid and abet bank fraud, and one count of conspiracy to commit money laundering. He was also <a href=\"https:\/\/ofac.treasury.gov\/recent-actions\/20240926\">sanctioned<\/a> by the U.S. Treasury Department\u2019s Office of Foreign Assets Control.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad ad--inline_1 \">\n<div class=\"ad__inner\"> <span class=\"screen-reader-text\">Advertisement<\/span> <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Shakhmametov operated the Joker\u2019s Stash carding website, according to the DOJ, which offered for sale data from approximately 40 million payment cards annually, totalling hundreds of millions of payment cards overall. Per the DOJ, that made it \u201cone of the largest known carding markets in history,\u201d generating estimated profits of between $280 million to more than $1 billion. <\/p>\n<p>Shakhmametov was charged with one count of conspiracy to commit and aid and abet bank fraud, one count of conspiracy to commit access device fraud, and one count of conspiracy to commit money laundering, the DOJ said.<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. Secret Service obtained court authorization to seize domains associated with UAPS and PM2BTC websites, the DOJ noted.<\/p>\n<p>Separately, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.state.gov\/transnational-organized-crime-rewards-program-offers-for-two-russian-nationals-and-sanctions-on-illicit-russian-virtual-currency-exchanges-and-cybercrime-facilitator\/\">U.S. State Department announced Thursday rewards<\/a> of up to $10 million each for information leading to the arrests of Ivanov and Shakhmametov, as well as $1 million each for information related to other leaders of Joker\u2019s Stash, UAPS, PM2BTC and PinPays.<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. Secret Service also seized two domains associated with the cryptocurrency exchange Cryptex.net, which offered users the ability to register for accounts without requiring the standard know-your-customer requirements, the DOJ said.
