{"id":5676,"date":"2024-10-08T16:48:57","date_gmt":"2024-10-08T21:48:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.darkreading.com\/vulnerabilities-threats\/5-cves-microsofts-october-2024-update-patch-now"},"modified":"2024-10-08T16:48:57","modified_gmt":"2024-10-08T21:48:57","slug":"5-cves-in-microsofts-october-update-to-patch-immediately","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ddi.mohflo.net\/index.php\/2024\/10\/08\/5-cves-in-microsofts-october-update-to-patch-immediately\/","title":{"rendered":"5 CVEs in Microsoft&#8217;s October Update to Patch Immediately"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"media_block\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/eu-images.contentstack.com\/v3\/assets\/blt6d90778a997de1cd\/blt81a7f618010a2b64\/670596bf65a1b709cc3914a1\/update_fadfebrian_shutterstock.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ddi.mohflo.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/5-cves-in-microsofts-october-update-to-patch-immediately.jpg?w=640&#038;ssl=1\" class=\"media_thumbnail\"><\/a><\/div>\n<div><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ddi.mohflo.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/5-cves-in-microsofts-october-update-to-patch-immediately.jpg?w=640&#038;ssl=1\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"><\/div>\n<p class=\"ContentParagraph ContentParagraph_align_left\" data-testid=\"content-paragraph\"><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\">Microsoft&#8217;s October security update addressed a substantial 117 vulnerabilities, including two actively exploited flaws and three publicly disclosed but as yet unexploited bugs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"ContentParagraph ContentParagraph_align_left\" data-testid=\"content-paragraph\"><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\">The update is the third largest so far this year in terms of disclosed CVEs, after <\/span><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\"><a class=\"ContentText-BodyTextChunk ContentText-BodyTextChunk_link\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.darkreading.com\/vulnerabilities-threats\/microsoft-patch-tuesday-no-zero-days-but-one-under-active-exploit\" rel=\"noopener\">April&#8217;s 147 CVEs<\/a><\/span><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\"> and <\/span><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\"><a class=\"ContentText-BodyTextChunk ContentText-BodyTextChunk_link\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.darkreading.com\/application-security\/attackers-already-exploiting-flaws-in-microsofts-july-security-update\" rel=\"noopener\">July&#8217;s set of 139 flaws<\/a><\/span><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"ContentParagraph ContentParagraph_align_left\" data-testid=\"content-paragraph\"><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\">A plurality of the bugs (46) enables remote code execution (RCE), and 28 others give threat actors a way to elevate privileges. The remaining vulnerabilities include those that enable spoofing, denial of service, and other malicious outcomes. As always, the CVEs affected a wide range of Microsoft technologies, including the Windows operating system, Microsoft&#8217;s Hyper-V virtualization technology, Windows Kerberos, Azure, Power BI, and .NET components.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_h2 ContentText_align_left\" data-testid=\"content-text\" id=\"Actively Exploited Bugs\">Actively Exploited Bugs<\/h2>\n<p class=\"ContentParagraph ContentParagraph_align_left\" data-testid=\"content-paragraph\"><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\">The two vulnerabilities in the <\/span><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\"><a class=\"ContentText-BodyTextChunk ContentText-BodyTextChunk_link\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/msrc.microsoft.com\/update-guide\/releaseNote\/2024-Oct\" rel=\"noopener\">October update<\/a><\/span><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\"> that attackers are actively exploiting are also the ones that merit immediate attention.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"ContentParagraph ContentParagraph_align_left\" data-testid=\"content-paragraph\"><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\">One of them is <\/span><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\"><a class=\"ContentText-BodyTextChunk ContentText-BodyTextChunk_link\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/msrc.microsoft.com\/update-guide\/en-US\/vulnerability\/CVE-2024-43573\" rel=\"noopener\">CVE-2024-43573<\/a><\/span><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\">, a spoofing vulnerability in MSHTML, or the Trident legacy browsing engine for Internet Explorer that Microsoft includes in modern versions to maintain backward compatibility. The bug is similar to <\/span><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\"><a class=\"ContentText-BodyTextChunk ContentText-BodyTextChunk_link\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/msrc.microsoft.com\/update-guide\/vulnerability\/CVE-2024-38112\" rel=\"noopener\">CVE-2024-38112<\/a><\/span><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\"> and <\/span><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\"><a class=\"ContentText-BodyTextChunk ContentText-BodyTextChunk_link\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/msrc.microsoft.com\/update-guide\/vulnerability\/CVE-2024-43461\" rel=\"noopener\">CVE-2024-43461<\/a><\/span><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\"> that Microsoft disclosed in MSHTML in July and September, respectively, which the <\/span><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\"><a class=\"ContentText-BodyTextChunk ContentText-BodyTextChunk_link\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.darkreading.com\/application-security\/void-banshee-exploits-second-microsoft-zero-day\" rel=\"noopener\">Void Banshee group<\/a><\/span><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\"> has been actively exploiting. Another unusual aspect of the bug: Microsoft has not credited anyone for reporting or discovering it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"ContentParagraph ContentParagraph_align_left\" data-testid=\"content-paragraph\"><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\">Organizations should not allow Microsoft&#8217;s moderate severity assessment for CVE-2024-43573 to lull them into thinking the bug does not merit immediate attention, researchers at Trend Micro&#8217;s Zero Day Initiative <\/span><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\"><a class=\"ContentText-BodyTextChunk ContentText-BodyTextChunk_link\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.zerodayinitiative.com\/blog\/2024\/10\/8\/the-october-2024-security-update-review\" rel=\"noopener\">wrote in a blog post<\/a><\/span><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\">. &#8220;There&#8217;s no word from Microsoft on whether it&#8217;s [Void Banshee], but considering there is no acknowledgment here, it makes me think the original patch was insufficient,&#8221; the ZDI post noted. &#8220;Either way, don&#8217;t ignore this based on the severity rating. Test and deploy this update quickly.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"ContentParagraph ContentParagraph_align_left\" data-testid=\"content-paragraph\"><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\">The other zero-day that attackers are currently exploiting is <\/span><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\"><a class=\"ContentText-BodyTextChunk ContentText-BodyTextChunk_link\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/msrc.microsoft.com\/update-guide\/en-US\/vulnerability\/CVE-2024-43572\" rel=\"noopener\">CVE-2024-43572<\/a><\/span><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\">, an RCE flaw in Microsoft Management Console (MMC). Microsoft said its patch prevents &#8220;untrusted Microsoft Saved Console (MSC) files from being opened to protect customers against the risks associated with this vulnerability.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"ContentParagraph ContentParagraph_align_left\" data-testid=\"content-paragraph\"><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\">Earlier this year, researchers at Elastic Security reported observing threat actors using specially crafted MMC files, dubbed <\/span><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\"><a class=\"ContentText-BodyTextChunk ContentText-BodyTextChunk_link\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.elastic.co\/security-labs\/grimresource\" rel=\"noopener\">GrimResource<\/a><\/span><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\"> for initial access and defense evasion purposes. However, it is not immediately clear if the attackers were exploiting CVE-2024-43572 in that campaign or some other bug. Microsoft didn&#8217;t address the point in this most recent patch update.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_h2 ContentText_align_left\" data-testid=\"content-text\" id=\"Publicly Known but Unexploited \u2014 for the Moment\">Publicly Known but Unexploited \u2014 for the Moment<\/h2>\n<p class=\"ContentParagraph ContentParagraph_align_left\" data-testid=\"content-paragraph\"><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\">The three other zero-day bugs that Microsoft disclosed as part of its October security update \u2014 but which attackers have not exploited yet \u2014 are <\/span><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\"><a class=\"ContentText-BodyTextChunk ContentText-BodyTextChunk_link\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/msrc.microsoft.com\/update-guide\/en-US\/vulnerability\/CVE-2024-6197\" rel=\"noopener\">CVE-2024-6197,<\/a><\/span><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\"> a remote code execution vulnerability in the open source cURLl command line tool; <\/span><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\"><a class=\"ContentText-BodyTextChunk ContentText-BodyTextChunk_link\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/msrc.microsoft.com\/update-guide\/vulnerability\/CVE-2024-20659\" rel=\"noopener\">CVE-2024-20659<\/a><\/span><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\">, a moderate severity security bypass vulnerability in Windows Hyper-V; and <\/span><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\"><a class=\"ContentText-BodyTextChunk ContentText-BodyTextChunk_link\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/msrc.microsoft.com\/update-guide\/vulnerability\/CVE-2024-43583\" rel=\"noopener\">CVE-2024-43583<\/a><\/span><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\">, a WinLogon elevation of privilege vulnerability.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"ContentParagraph ContentParagraph_align_left\" data-testid=\"content-paragraph\"><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\">Mike Walters, president and co-founder of Action 1, said organizations should prioritize patching CVE-2024-6197. Though Microsoft has assessed the vulnerability as something that attackers are less likely to exploit, Walters expects to see proof-of-concept code for the flaw become available soon. &#8220;This vulnerability is particularly concerning, because it impacts the fundamental architecture of memory management in cURL, a tool integral to data transfers across various network protocols,&#8221; Walters <\/span><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\"><a class=\"ContentText-BodyTextChunk ContentText-BodyTextChunk_link\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.action1.com\/patch-tuesday-october-2024\/?vyj\" rel=\"noopener\">wrote in a blog post<\/a><\/span><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\">.&nbsp;&#8220;The affected systems include those using cURL or libcurl, the underlying library that powers numerous applications on diverse platforms.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"ContentParagraph ContentParagraph_align_left\" data-testid=\"content-paragraph\"><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\">Meanwhile, organizations using third-party input method editors (IMEs) that allow users to type in different languages are at particular risk from CVE-2024-43583, which is the WinLogon elevation of privilege flaw, Walters added. &#8220;This vulnerability is particularly pertinent in diverse settings where multilingual support is crucial, such as in global enterprises or educational institutions,&#8221; he said. Attackers could exploit the vulnerability as part of a broader attack chain to compromise affected environments he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_h2 ContentText_align_left\" data-testid=\"content-text\" id=\"Other Critical Bugs that Need Attention Now\">Other Critical Bugs that Need Attention Now<\/h2>\n<p class=\"ContentParagraph ContentParagraph_align_left\" data-testid=\"content-paragraph\"><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\">Microsoft assessed just three of the 117 vulnerabilities it disclosed this week as being critical. All three are RCEs. They are <\/span><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\"><a class=\"ContentText-BodyTextChunk ContentText-BodyTextChunk_link\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/msrc.microsoft.com\/update-guide\/vulnerability\/CVE-2024-43468\" rel=\"noopener\">CVE-2024-43468<\/a><\/span><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\"> in Microsoft Configuration Manager, <\/span><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\"><a class=\"ContentText-BodyTextChunk ContentText-BodyTextChunk_link\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/msrc.microsoft.com\/update-guide\/vulnerability\/CVE-2024-43582\" rel=\"noopener\">CVE-2024-43582<\/a><\/span><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\"> in the Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) server, and <\/span><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\"><a class=\"ContentText-BodyTextChunk ContentText-BodyTextChunk_link\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/msrc.microsoft.com\/update-guide\/vulnerability\/CVE-2024-43488\" rel=\"noopener\">CVE-2024-43488<\/a><\/span><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\"> in Visual Studio Code extension for Arduino Remote.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"ContentParagraph ContentParagraph_align_left\" data-testid=\"content-paragraph\"><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\">CVE-2024-43468 highlights some memory safety concerns with Microsoft Configuration Manager, Cody Dietz, a researcher with Automox, <\/span><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\"><a class=\"ContentText-BodyTextChunk ContentText-BodyTextChunk_link\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.automox.com\/blog\/patch-tuesday-october-2024\" rel=\"noopener\">wrote in a blog post<\/a><\/span><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\">. &#8220;Successful exploitation of this vulnerability can allow for lateral movement throughout a network and offers the potential to deploy malicious configurations to other systems.&#8221; In addition to immediately patching the vulnerability, organizations should consider using an alternate service account to mitigate risk, Dietz said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"ContentParagraph ContentParagraph_align_left\" data-testid=\"content-paragraph\"><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\">Automox also highlighted <\/span><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\"><a class=\"ContentText-BodyTextChunk ContentText-BodyTextChunk_link\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/msrc.microsoft.com\/update-guide\/en-US\/vulnerability\/CVE-2024-43533\" rel=\"noopener\">CVE-2024-43533<\/a><\/span><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\">, a high-severity bug in RDP. The bug is present in the RDP client and enables attackers to execute arbitrary code on a client machine. &#8220;Unlike typical RDP vulnerabilities targeting servers, this one flips the script, offering a unique attack vector against clients,&#8221; Tom Bowyer, director of IT security at Automox, wrote in the company&#8217;s blog post<\/span><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\"><span class=\"ContentText-BodyTextChunk ContentText-BodyTextChunk_italic\">.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"ContentParagraph ContentParagraph_align_left\" data-testid=\"content-paragraph\"><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\">&#8220;This vulnerability opens the door for back-hacks,&#8221;
