(Courtesy of Amazon) <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/header>\n<div class=\"single-article__content\">\n<div class=\"single-article__content-inner has-drop-cap\"> <html readability=\"47.368959294165\"><body readability=\"95.540027137042\"><\/p>\n<p>Whether it\u2019s selling books, delivering groceries, broadcasting professional football games, or providing countless organizations with IT infrastructure, it\u2019s imperative for Amazon to provide world-class security for its hundreds of millions of customers. But the company has realized the tech used to supply that security can only take it so far. <\/p>\n<p>Executives for the company say that security being baked into the company\u2019s culture helps drive innovation, with security engineers embedded in the development process from day one. Amazon created this structure so security doesn\u2019t become an afterthought, impeding progress in company initiatives or pushing products into the marketplace that are riddled with vulnerabilities. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cSecurity is not a bolt-on when you do culture correctly in an organization,\u201d Steve Schmidt, Amazon\u2019s chief security officer, told CyberScoop. \u201cOne of the biggest problems with security organizations is they slow down companies. But if a security engineer [is] embedded in a development team, it means the cycle time for questions and answers is super short. It means that the security engineer is there to see how people are thinking about approaching problems, about where they\u2019re going with information, and it allows them to say, \u2018Hey, instead of doing this, do you think about doing that?\u2019 It\u2019s going to result in something down the road that\u2019s easier to support [and] that\u2019s more secure.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>One particular program where security is driving innovation is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aboutamazon.com\/what-we-do\/devices-services\/project-kuiper\">Project Kuiper<\/a>, which will consist of a low-Earth orbit (LEO) satellite constellation that Amazon says will provide affordable, high-speed internet around the world, particularly where terrestrial, fiber-based internet is hard to reach. The service will launch 3,000 satellites that offer low latency and high-speed connectivity, providing 100 Mbps connection via customer terminals when it\u2019s available in 2025. <\/p>\n<div class=\"ad ad--inline_1 \">\n<div class=\"ad__inner\"> <span class=\"screen-reader-text\">Advertisement<\/span> <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Given the extreme sensitivity of satellite-based internet, Amazon has spent a considerable amount of time implementing security into the devices it will eventually put in orbit. Teams of hardware and software security experts have worked alongside aerospace engineers on proprietary devices, ensuring encryption, key management and embedded systems are as secure as possible. Other teams have worked on more granular measures, including hardware <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rambus.com\/blogs\/hardware-root-of-trust\/\">roots of trust<\/a>, end-to-end data encryption using AES-256, and key exchanges using <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.ergoplatform.com\/dev\/scs\/sigma\/#:~:text=Sigma%20protocols%20(%CE%A3%2Dprotocols),without%20revealing%20the%20value%20itself.\">Sigma protocols<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The past few years have shown the cybersecurity threats to satellite-based internet services are real. In 2022, Russian-linked threat actors <a href=\"https:\/\/cyberscoop.com\/viasat-ka-sat-hack-black-hat\/\">crippled Viasat\u2019s satellite communications<\/a> on the eve of the country\u2019s invasion of Ukraine. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/starlink-internet-dish-hack\/\">Other research has shown<\/a> that cheap tools can be used to gain access to Starlink, a similar satellite-based internet service owned by SpaceX.<\/p>\n<p>Amy Herzog, Amazon\u2019s CISO for ads and devices, said all of the important security work being done now is to avoid having customers have to deal with connectivity problems, whether it is from a hack or something else entirely. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur customers expect that when they turn it on, they\u2019re going to get a seamless and secure experience that they don\u2019t need to think about, or make too many choices about, or have a security person\u2019s knowledge to do correctly,\u201d she told CyberScoop. <\/p>\n<p>Herzog says the security work on Kuiper is similar to what goes on behind the scenes for all of Amazon\u2019s devices, from the Echo smart speaker to Ring doorbell cameras to Fire tablets. <\/p>\n<div class=\"ad ad--inline_1 \">\n<div class=\"ad__inner\"> <span class=\"screen-reader-text\">Advertisement<\/span> <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Project Kuiper satellites \u201cmay be bleeding edge, but we approach it the same way that we approach devices, or the cloud, or any other thing,\u201d Herzog said. \u201cWhich is to think about, \u2018Hey, who\u2019s using this? What do they care about? What\u2019s the threat landscape?\u2019 Let\u2019s figure out how we make sure that we build in the [security] controls from the [start of] design.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The synergy is something Schmidt believes could help enterprises avoid the \u201creally unfortunate outcomes\u201d when security is deprioritized or siloed from other lines of business. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe cannot afford to have that happen,\u201d Schmidt said. \u201cOur customers depend on us for their mission critical data. They depend on us to operate their businesses. They depend on us to store the most important things that they have.
