(Photo by Anna Moneymaker\/Getty Images) <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/header>\n<div class=\"single-article__content\">\n<div class=\"single-article__content-inner has-drop-cap\"> <html readability=\"17.680844990009\"><body readability=\"46.323878069433\"><\/p>\n<p>Executive branch agencies were briefing a slate of House committees Thursday about a Chinese hack that infiltrated major telecommunications companies and reportedly targeted the phones of top members of the Donald Trump campaign \u2014 including the president-elect himself \u2014 and top U.S. officials, according to a source familiar with the plans.<\/p>\n<p>The committees receiving the briefing are the Energy and Commerce, Homeland Security, Intelligence and Judiciary panels, as well as the Appropriations subcommittees that oversee spending at the Department of Homeland Security, the Commerce Department, the Justice Department and science budgets, and the Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party.<\/p>\n<p>The briefing agencies include the FBI, the Justice Department\u2019s National Security Division, the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency and the National Telecommunications and Information Administration.<\/p>\n<p>A cascading set of revelations has <a href=\"https:\/\/cyberscoop.com\/congress-salt-typhoon-hack-telecoms-att-lumen-verizon\/\">attracted congressional attention<\/a> about the scope of the breach, said to be the work of the Chinese government-connected hacking group known as Salt Typhoon. A number of panels had requested a briefing from the Biden administration, while others have sought information from the telecommunications companies themselves. The House Energy and Commerce Committee got a briefing from Lumen, but AT&T and Verizon directed the committee\u2019s questions to the FBI, according to a source familiar with the development.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad ad--inline_1 \">\n<div class=\"ad__inner\"> <span class=\"screen-reader-text\">Advertisement<\/span> <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>In the past week, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/politics\/national-security\/china-hack-enabled-vast-spying-on-u-s-officials-likely-ensnaring-thousands-of-contacts-1340ba4a?st=hrkjK3&reflink=desktopwebshare_permalink\">The Wall Street Journal<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/opinions\/2024\/11\/02\/china-spying-telecom-trump-harris-fbi-cell-phone\/\">The Washington Post<\/a> have spilled additional details about the breach, suggesting that the number of people who are affected or who could have been spied upon has expanded beyond the initial disclosures.<\/p>\n<p>Federal agencies say <a href=\"https:\/\/cyberscoop.com\/report-chinese-hackers-used-telecom-access-to-go-after-phones-of-trump-vance\/\">they are investigating<\/a> the \u201cunauthorized access to telecommunications commercial infrastructure\u201d by Chinese hackers. The Cyber Safety Review Board is also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nextgov.com\/cybersecurity\/2024\/10\/dhs-cyber-review-board-investigate-chinese-hack-us-telecom-victim-net-widens\/400597\/\">set to probe<\/a> the incident.
