The crimes ranged from ransomware to business email compromise.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s the latest international operation to tackle cybercrime on the continent, following a pair of similarly wide-spanning operations nicknamed <a href=\"https:\/\/cyberscoop.com\/africa-cybercrime-operation-interpol\/\">Africa Cyber Surge<\/a> in 2022 and 2023. And there\u2019s promise from participants of more to come.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThrough Serengeti, AFRIPOL has significantly enhanced support for law enforcement in African Union Member States,\u201d ambassador Jalel Chelba, Afripol\u2019s executive director, said in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.interpol.int\/en\/News-and-Events\/News\/2024\/Major-cybercrime-operation-nets-1-006-suspects\">a news release<\/a>. \u201cWe\u2019ve facilitated key arrests and deepened insights into cybercrime trends. Our focus now includes emerging threats like AI-driven malware and advanced attack techniques.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad ad--inline_1 \">\n<div class=\"ad__inner\"> <span class=\"screen-reader-text\">Advertisement<\/span> <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Said Valdecy Urquiza, secretary general of Interpol: \u201cWe know that this is just the tip of the iceberg, which is why we will continue targeting these criminal groups worldwide.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Afripol is the African Union\u2019s specialized police body that coordinates operations across nations there.
