The sheer amount of software and applications within an organization&#8217;s IT environment has increased the attack surface and, consequently, the number of vulnerabilities. According to the&nbsp;<\/span><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\"><a class=\"ContentText-BodyTextChunk ContentText-BodyTextChunk_link\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.verizon.com\/business\/resources\/reports\/dbir\/?CMP=OOH_SMB_OTH_22222_MC_20200501_NA_NM20200079_00001\">Verizon &#8220;2024 Data Breach Investigations Report,&#8221;<\/a><\/span><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\"> &#8220;14% of breaches involved the exploitation of vulnerabilities as an initial access step, almost triple the amount from last year&#8217;s report.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"ContentParagraph ContentParagraph_align_left\" data-testid=\"content-paragraph\"><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\">With vulnerability exploitation increasing, prioritization can be difficult and time-consuming if you don&#8217;t have a clear plan. However, cybersecurity defenders can learn from these experiences.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_h2 ContentText_align_left\" data-testid=\"content-text\" id=\"Key Considerations for Vulnerability Evaluation\">Key Considerations for Vulnerability Evaluation<\/h2>\n<p class=\"ContentParagraph ContentParagraph_align_left\" data-testid=\"content-paragraph\"><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\">The first step in vulnerability evaluation mirrors the basics of reading comprehension: understanding the who,&nbsp;what,&nbsp;when,&nbsp;where, and&nbsp;why:<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"ContentParagraph ContentParagraph_align_left\" data-testid=\"content-paragraph\"><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\"><span class=\"ContentText-BodyTextChunk ContentText-BodyTextChunk_bold\">Who:<\/span><\/span><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\">&nbsp;Who is discussing vulnerabilities? Know that vulnerability discourse on social media and online forums may include fear-mongering and hyperbole.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"ContentParagraph ContentParagraph_align_left\" data-testid=\"content-paragraph\"><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\"><span class=\"ContentText-BodyTextChunk ContentText-BodyTextChunk_bold\">What:<\/span><\/span><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\">&nbsp;After identifying a vulnerability, analyze its exploitability. For example, when the&nbsp;<\/span><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\"><a class=\"ContentText-BodyTextChunk ContentText-BodyTextChunk_link\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.darkreading.com\/vulnerabilities-threats\/third-moveit-transfer-vulnerability-progress-software\">MOVEit Transfer&nbsp;<\/a><\/span><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\"><a class=\"ContentText-BodyTextChunk ContentText-BodyTextChunk_link\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.darkreading.com\/vulnerabilities-threats\/third-moveit-transfer-vulnerability-progress-software\">vulnerability<\/a><\/span><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\"> emerged in 2023, there were early signs pointing to the potential for mass exploitation. The cybercriminal group behind the breach was known to target vulnerabilities in file transfer software for spray-and-pray attacks that relied on data exfiltration without encryption to reach more victims. Ultimately, more than 2,700 organizations and 95.8 million people were impacted by the breach, according to cybersecurity firm&nbsp;<\/span><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\"><a class=\"ContentText-BodyTextChunk ContentText-BodyTextChunk_link\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.emsisoft.com\/en\/blog\/44123\/unpacking-the-moveit-breach-statistics-and-analysis\/\">Emsisoft<\/a><\/span><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\">, teaching the cybersecurity world three things:<\/span><\/p>\n<div data-component=\"basic-list\" class=\"BasicList BasicList_nestedLevel_0 BasicList_variant_ordered BasicList_limited\">\n<ol data-testid=\"basic-list-ordered\" class=\"BasicList-OrderedList BasicList-OrderedList_nestedLevel_0 body-normal\">\n<li>\n<div class=\"BasicList-ListItem BasicList-ListItem_variant_ordered\" readability=\"7\"><span data-component=\"icon\" data-name=\"Circle\" class=\"BasicList-ListIcon BasicList-ListIcon_variant_ordered\"><\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"BasicList-Item\" readability=\"9\">\n<p class=\"ContentParagraph ContentParagraph_align_left\" data-testid=\"content-paragraph\"><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\"><span class=\"ContentText-BodyTextChunk ContentText-BodyTextChunk_bold\">Adversary behavior can influence the likelihood of exploitation.&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\">A critical vulnerability in a file transfer appliance carried additional urgency in 2023 because of the strategies employed by cybercriminals.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div class=\"BasicList-ListItem BasicList-ListItem_variant_ordered\" readability=\"8\"><span data-component=\"icon\" data-name=\"Circle\" class=\"BasicList-ListIcon BasicList-ListIcon_variant_ordered\"><\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"BasicList-Item\" readability=\"11\">\n<p class=\"ContentParagraph ContentParagraph_align_left\" data-testid=\"content-paragraph\"><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\"><span class=\"ContentText-BodyTextChunk ContentText-BodyTextChunk_bold\">Zero-day vulnerabilities with low attack complexity are a higher priority.&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\">Attacks began days before the MOVEit vulnerability was publicly disclosed and one attack vector allowed data exfiltration directly from the MOVEit application. One caveat here is that not all zero-day vulnerabilities are a high priority; there are other factors to consider, such as attack complexity.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div class=\"BasicList-ListItem BasicList-ListItem_variant_ordered\" readability=\"7\"><span data-component=\"icon\" data-name=\"Circle\" class=\"BasicList-ListIcon BasicList-ListIcon_variant_ordered\"><\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"BasicList-Item\" readability=\"9\">\n<p class=\"ContentParagraph ContentParagraph_align_left\" data-testid=\"content-paragraph\"><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\"><span class=\"ContentText-BodyTextChunk ContentText-BodyTextChunk_bold\">Vulnerabilities with cascading effects on the supply chain are critical priorities. <\/span><\/span><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\">Some organizations were impacted by the breach because their vendor&#8217;s contractor&#8217;s subcontractor used MOVEit Transfer.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div>\n<h3 class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_h3 ContentText_align_left\" data-testid=\"content-text\" id=\"Log4j\">Log4j<\/h3>\n<p class=\"ContentParagraph ContentParagraph_align_left\" data-testid=\"content-paragraph\"><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\">The 2021 Log4j incident highlights the challenges with identifying vulnerable software components in your environment. Accurate asset inventories and widespread SBOM adoption \u2014&nbsp;which is essentially an ingredients list of software components&nbsp;\u2014&nbsp;can go a long way in improving how organizations identify and respond to future vulnerabilities.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_h2 ContentText_align_left\" data-testid=\"content-text\" id=\"Knowing the Score&nbsp;With Vulnerabilities\">Knowing the Score&nbsp;With Vulnerabilities<\/h2>\n<p class=\"ContentParagraph ContentParagraph_align_left\" data-testid=\"content-paragraph\"><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\">Cybersecurity defenders have at their disposal a number of vulnerability databases and scoring frameworks, such as&nbsp;the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency&#8217;s (CISA&#8217;s)&nbsp;<\/span><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\"><a class=\"ContentText-BodyTextChunk ContentText-BodyTextChunk_link\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cisa.gov\/known-exploited-vulnerabilities-catalog\">Known Exploited Vulnerabilities (KEV) catalog<\/a><\/span><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\"> and the&nbsp;<\/span><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\"><a class=\"ContentText-BodyTextChunk ContentText-BodyTextChunk_link\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nvd.nist.gov\/\">National Vulnerability Database (NVD)<\/a><\/span><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\">. As organizations mature and refine their vulnerability management program, they can begin to implement additional steps,&nbsp;such as continuous monitoring, automation, and the integration of vulnerability management tools with configuration management databases (CMDBs) to improve detection and remediation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"ContentParagraph ContentParagraph_align_left\" data-testid=\"content-paragraph\"><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\">In the future, we may see software suppliers adopt a&nbsp;<\/span><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\"><a class=\"ContentText-BodyTextChunk ContentText-BodyTextChunk_link\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cisa.gov\/securebydesign\/pledge\/statements-of-support\">secure-by-design<\/a><\/span><span class=\"ContentText ContentText_variant_bodyNormal\" data-testid=\"content-text\">&nbsp;philosophy that takes greater ownership of customer security outcomes. This could be influenced by future regulations, heightened liability for security executives, and the loss of customer trust. We may also see new use cases for emerging technologies, like machine learning and artificial intelligence, to help speed up and guide the vulnerability prioritization process, while maintaining a human-in-the-loop approach.
