(Photo by Kevin Dietsch\/Getty Images) <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/header>\n<div class=\"single-article__content\">\n<div class=\"single-article__content-inner has-drop-cap\"> <html readability=\"26.187631763879\"><body readability=\"56.235741444867\"><\/p>\n<p>A senator on Thursday questioned whether the president\u2019s pick to lead the FBI might harm cybercrime investigations with his plans for the bureau.<\/p>\n<p>At a nomination hearing of the Senate Judiciary Committee, Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn., asked Kash Patel about comments he made in September.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019d shut down the FBI Hoover building on day one and open it the next day as a museum of the deep state,\u201d he said then, pledging to disburse 7,000 employees across the country to \u201cchase down criminals.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Klobuchar\u2019s question came at the end of her time limit as she tried to get an answer.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad ad--inline_1 \">\n<div class=\"ad__inner\"> <span class=\"screen-reader-text\">Advertisement<\/span> <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cCan he just answer the question? If he said that the FBI headquarters \u2014 where they investigate cybercrime and terrorism \u2014 should be shut down and opened up as a deep state museum?\u201d she asked. \u201cDid he say that the headquarters should be shut down?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It was a rare moment of focus on cybersecurity in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/01\/30\/politics\/takeaways-kash-patel-fbi-confirmation-hearing\/index.html\">the contentious hearing<\/a> to vet Patel, one of President Donald Trump\u2019s more divisive nominees. But it wasn\u2019t <a href=\"https:\/\/cyberscoop.com\/removal-cyber-safety-review-board-members\/\">the only question to surface<\/a> of late about the impact of Trump administration decisions on cyber personnel.<\/p>\n<p>Sen. Peter Welch, D-Vt., asked Patel for his opinion of Trump\u2019s grant of clemency to Ross Ulbricht, whom a jury convicted in 2015 of conspiracy to commit computer hacking, among other crimes.<\/p>\n<p>Patel answered that it wasn\u2019t his place to comment on presidential pardons.<\/p>\n<p>Patel\u2019s hearing was <a href=\"https:\/\/cyberscoop.com\/tulsi-gabbard-director-national-intelligence-section-702-snowden\/\">one of two<\/a> on the Hill on Thursday where nominees addressed their views on surveillance authorities, specifically those under <a href=\"https:\/\/cyberscoop.com\/tag\/section-702\/\">Section 702<\/a> of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad ad--inline_1 \">\n<div class=\"ad__inner\"> <span class=\"screen-reader-text\">Advertisement<\/span> <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>A big point of debate over renewing those authorities in the past two years was whether to require a warrant when the FBI queries the database about U.S. citizens whose information had been collected incidentally because they were communicating with foreign surveillance targets.<\/p>\n<p>Those who opposed the warrant requirement said it would slow investigations too severely, and Patel told Sen.
