And a group of senators said DOGE was taking \u201cillegal actions\u201d that risk <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/02\/05\/us\/politics\/cia-names-list.html\">exposure of classified<\/a> and sensitive information.<\/p>\n<p>Musk, head of the special governmental board that President Donald Trump has set up as a temporary organization, has reportedly dispatched aides to access databases at the <a href=\"https:\/\/fedscoop.com\/treasury-sued-by-union-groups-over-systems-access-given-to-musk-doge\/\">Treasury Department<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/fedscoop.com\/opm-email-federal-workforce-lawsuit-server-privacy-security\/\">Office of Personnel Management<\/a>, U.S. Agency for International Development, Small Business Administration and perhaps others.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy all accounts, DOGE is running roughshod across Federal networks, accessing untold amounts of information about Americans in complete disregard for security and privacy standards,\u201d wrote the House lawmakers, led by Rep. Bennie Thompson, D-Miss. \u201cThe systems include the payment systems that the Treasury Department uses to honor U.S. financial obligations, those that store sensitive personnel data on Federal employees, and reportedly classified information systems, which DOGE has absolutely no authority to access.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad ad--inline_1 \">\n<div class=\"ad__inner\"> <span class=\"screen-reader-text\">Advertisement<\/span> <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cThis reporting also indicates that DOGE officials have transferred data to commercial servers that may not have been vetted for compliance with security and privacy requirements, another potential violation of Federal law,\u201d they said <a href=\"https:\/\/democrats-homeland.house.gov\/imo\/media\/doc\/OMB%20DOGE%20Letter%2002052025.pdf\">in their letter<\/a> to Matthew Vaeth, acting director of the Office of Management and Budget.<\/p>\n<p>The senators, led by top Intelligence Committee Democrat Mark Warner of Virginia, separately <a href=\"https:\/\/www.warner.senate.gov\/public\/_cache\/files\/c\/0\/c0a7443f-d83f-4ce1-b616-0ff5e27ea43d\/78DE44797577A3FE49020799074052A70518B8C0D3038734E381683141953EBD.quill---letter-l22665---ssci-dems-to-trump-cos---doge---version-3---02-05-2025-01-58-pm.pdf\">wrote to Susie Wiles<\/a>, chief of staff to Trump.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs you know, information is classified to protect the national security interests of the United States,\u201d they said about DOGE\u2019s \u201cseemingly unfettered access to classified materials and Americans\u2019 personal information.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGovernment employees and contractors only receive access to such information after they have undergone a rigorous background investigation and demonstrated a \u2018need to know,\u2019\u201d they said, while also expressing concern about access to sensitive personal information. \u201cCircumventing these requirements creates enormous counterintelligence and security risks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cyber experts and others have <a href=\"https:\/\/cyberscoop.com\/musk-doge-opm-treasury-breach\/\">compared the DOGE activity<\/a> to a data breach.
