adversaries moved one step closer to law Tuesday by advancing out of the House Energy and Commerce Committee.<\/p>\n<p>The Removing Our Unsecure Technologies to Ensure Reliability and Security (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/118th-congress\/house-bill\/7589\/text\">ROUTERS<\/a>) Act from Reps. Bob Latta, R-Ohio, and Robin Kelly, D-Ill., would require the Commerce Department\u2019s assistant secretary for communications and information to oversee a study into devices that are \u201cdesigned, developed, manufactured, or supplied\u201d by or subject to the influence of a \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/uscode.house.gov\/view.xhtml?req=granuleid:USC-prelim-title10-section4872&num=0&edition=prelim\">covered country<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/d1dth6e84htgma.cloudfront.net\/16_H_R_866_ROUTERS_Act_bfa2ae5487.pdf\">two-page bill<\/a> is a companion to <a href=\"https:\/\/cyberscoop.com\/routers-modems-national-security-risks-senate-bill\/\">legislation introduced in January<\/a> by Sens. Marsha Blackburn, R-Tenn., and Ben Ray Luj\u00e1n, D-N.M. In a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackburn.senate.gov\/2025\/1\/issues\/technology\/blackburn-luj-n-introduce-bill-to-safeguard-u-s-communications-networks-from-national-security-threats\">press release<\/a> accompanying the introduction of the Senate bill, China, Russia, Iran, North Korean, Cuba and Venezuela were called out specifically as covered countries. The Senate version was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/119th-congress\/senate-bill\/244\/all-actions\">reported favorably<\/a> out of the chamber\u2019s Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee last month. <\/p>\n<p>Kelly said Tuesday during the House markup that broadband infrastructure has been a top priority for her on the committee. Closing the digital dive is something she remains \u201cdeeply committed to,\u201d but precautions for doing so must be taken.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad ad--inline_1 \">\n<div class=\"ad__inner\"> <span class=\"screen-reader-text\">Advertisement<\/span> <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cWe must protect the privacy and security of those millions of Americans who rely on the internet to accomplish critical everyday tasks,\u201d she said, \u201clike online banking, educational purposes, remote sensing and monitoring, and more leisure activities like shopping and streaming.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kelly successfully introduced an amendment to the bill that would charge Commerce\u2019s assistant secretary \u2014 who also serves as administrator of the National Telecommunications and Information Administration \u2014 with examining cybersecurity vulnerabilities as part of the department\u2019s overarching study into adversarial-controlled routers and devices.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis amendment is not only good government given the recent cyberattacks we have seen on our communications networks and personal devices, but it also corresponds with an amendment Senator Luj\u00e1n offered that was added to the Senate version of this bill last month,\u201d she said. \u201cMy amendment will make a technical clarification to ensure that the secretary relies on the entire expertise of the department when conducting the study required by this bill.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Routers have emerged as a <a href=\"https:\/\/cyberscoop.com\/research-reveals-vulnerabilities-in-routers-that-left-700000-plus-exposed\/\">popular target for threat actors<\/a> in recent years.
