networks more vulnerable to Chinese hacker intrusion, an industry official told lawmakers Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTariffs will only raise prices,\u201d David Stehlin, CEO of the Telecommunications Industry Association, told Rep. Darren Soto, D-Fla. While it makes sense to find ways to bring production back to the United States, Stehlin testified, \u201cif over a long period of time, those prices are raised, fewer networks are going to get built and that\u2019s a problem.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Stehlin made his remarks at a hearing of the House Energy and Commerce Communications and Technology Subcommittee on securing telecommunications infrastructure, as the Trump administration seesaws on its approach to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2025\/04\/30\/nx-s1-5380204\/trump-economy-gdp-tariffs-recession-consumers\">raising tariffs worldwide<\/a>. The sweeping breach of telecommunications companies by the Chinese hacking group <a href=\"https:\/\/cyberscoop.com\/tag\/salt-typhoon\/\">Salt Typhoon<\/a> was fresh on members\u2019 minds, and how to address the weaknesses the hackers exploited was a frequent topic of questioning.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s broad bipartisan consensus that the United States needs to rely less on telecommunications technology made overseas, but there was a divide between the parties on the proper focus, with Republicans taking aim at bureaucratic and regulatory hurdles and Democrats zeroing in on Trump administration policies.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad ad--inline_1 \">\n<div class=\"ad__inner\"> <span class=\"screen-reader-text\">Advertisement<\/span> <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2025\/mar\/31\/trump-order-chips-act\">Trump has floated repealing<\/a> the CHIPS and Science Act, which dedicated billions toward semiconductor manufacturing and related telecommunications purposes. Rep. Nanette Barrag\u00e1n, D-Calif., asked Stehlin if that would be helpful.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt would not be helpful because we need more capital investment in the United States,\u201d he answered. \u201cFundamentally and strategically it is critical these skills are brought back as soon as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Democrats also criticized the Trump administration over <a href=\"https:\/\/cyberscoop.com\/eric-swalwell-hill-briefing-planned-cisa-personnel-cuts\/\">proposed personnel cuts<\/a> at the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, as well as for <a href=\"https:\/\/cyberscoop.com\/removal-cyber-safety-review-board-members\/\">halting a Cyber Safety Review Board review<\/a> of the Salt Typhoon intrusions. Laura Galante, who served as director of the Cyber Threat Intelligence Integration Center in the Biden administration, seconded their concerns.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCutting off that investigation into Salt Typhoon early really limits the telecommunications sector\u2019s ability to understand from all sides of the house \u2026 how we can improve,\u201d she said. \u201cIt really shortchanges our national security.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And \u201ccybersecurity is an inherently federal issue,\u201d she said, when asked about planned cuts to CISA and a shift to state and local responsibility.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad ad--inline_1 \">\n<div class=\"ad__inner\"> <span class=\"screen-reader-text\">Advertisement<\/span> <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>On the other side of the aisle, subcommittee Chairman Richard Hudson, R-N.C., criticized the speed of federal reviews of foreign investments in the telecommunications sector by a body known as Team Telecom. \u201cAppplications often get bogged down by delays and bureaucratic hurdles,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>In response to questions from Rep.
