of the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, according to a summary released Friday.<\/p>\n<p>That would amount to a nearly 17% reduction to the agency\u2019s approximately $3 billion budget. The administration did not release a detailed itemization of the cuts, only <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Fiscal-Year-2026-Discretionary-Budget-Request.pdf\">an outline<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Budget refocuses CISA on its core mission \u2014 Federal network defense and enhancing the security and resilience of critical infrastructure \u2014 while eliminating weaponization and waste,\u201d a summary reads.<\/p>\n<p>In broad strokes, if approved by Congress, the budget would target for reduction what it identified as \u201cso-called\u201d disinformation and misinformation programs and offices; \u201cduplicative\u201d programs of other programs at the state and federal level; \u201cexternal engagement offices such as international affairs\u201d; and consolidate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Ending-Weaponization-of-the-Federal-Government-Fact-Sheet.pdf\">\u201credundant security advisors and programs.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<div class=\"ad ad--inline_1 \">\n<div class=\"ad__inner\"> <span class=\"screen-reader-text\">Advertisement<\/span> <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Neither CISA nor the Office of Management and Budget immediately answered questions about what specific programs or offices would face elimination or reduction.<\/p>\n<p>The budget summary says that CISA programs were a hub of \u201cthe Censorship Industrial Complex to violate the First Amendment, target Americans for protected speech, and target the President,\u201d and that \u201cthe Budget eliminates programs focused on so-called misinformation and propaganda.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>CISA doesn\u2019t have any offices explicitly dedicated to combating misinformation or disinformation. During Trump\u2019s first administration, and continuing into a stretch of the Biden administration, CISA ran a \u201cRumor Control\u201d website in a bid to dispel false information about the election process. Trump took such great issue with the site that he <a href=\"https:\/\/cyberscoop.com\/trump-chris-krebs-2020-election-security-twitter\/\">fired then-director Chris Krebs<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But CISA under the Biden administration said it had <a href=\"https:\/\/cyberscoop.com\/cisa-no-credible-election-threats-and-no-contact-with-social-media-companies\/\">halted communications with social media companies<\/a> about election misinformation and disinformation. And the Trump administration already placed some election security officials who worked on disinformation and misinformation <a href=\"https:\/\/cyberscoop.com\/cisa-misinformation-disinformation-administrative-leave\/\">on administrative leave<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Election security overall appears to be a very small part of the CISA budget. In a House hearing in January, Brandon Wales, former CISA executive director, was asked how much the agency spent on its disinformation work. \u201cLast time we looked at this it was something less than $2 million,\u201d said Wales, adding that he did not believe the work detracted from CISA\u2019s other missions.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad ad--inline_1 \">\n<div class=\"ad__inner\"> <span class=\"screen-reader-text\">Advertisement<\/span> <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The Supreme Court <a href=\"https:\/\/cyberscoop.com\/supreme-court-rejects-effort-to-limit-government-communication-on-misinformation\/\">ruled last year<\/a> that plaintiffs alleging federal censorship based on efforts like CISA\u2019s to communicate with social media platforms on election misinformation had a \u201cstartlingly broad\u201d definition of the term \u201ccensorship,\u201d and rejected the bid from Republican state officials to limit such efforts.<\/p>\n<p>In a briefing with reporters Friday, a senior OMB official said that the goal of the budget was to \u201cmake sure that CISA is actually in the business of cybersecurity, as opposed to disinformation funding and funding grants at the Department of Homeland Security and universities to combat and call extremist half the country who just care about normal conservative things.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>DHS had also already cut funding for programs <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2025-01-07\/us-pulls-back-from-disrupting-violent-extremism-on-social-media\">studying online radicalization<\/a> under the Biden administration.
