Bennie Thompson, the top Democrat on the House Homeland Security Committee, told DHS Secretary Kristi Noem at a hearing of the panel. \u201cDespite repeated requests from this committee on how many people have been fired or have been bullied into quitting \u2026 DHS has refused to share that information.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt should worry every American that we do not know how many people are left at FEMA to respond to disasters and how many cyber defenders still work at CISA as China and other adversaries attack our systems every day,\u201d he continued.<\/p>\n<p>Thompson made his remarks at the close of the hearing, meaning Noem didn\u2019t have a chance to reply. DHS did not immediately respond to a request for comment about Thompson\u2019s assertion.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad ad--inline_1 \">\n<div class=\"ad__inner\"> <span class=\"screen-reader-text\">Advertisement<\/span> <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Thompson also said there\u2019s no plan for CISA, and he criticized Noem for \u201cfalsely\u201d accusing CISA of censorship as the Trump administration uses the latter contention as a major justification for a proposed <a href=\"https:\/\/cyberscoop.com\/trump-administration-proposed-cisa-budget-cuts\/\">$491 million<\/a> cut to the agency for fiscal 2026. \u201cNow we are all paying a price for you buying into a baseless conspiracy theory,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cyberscoop.com\/cisa-workforce-cuts-house-leaders-legislation\/\">Past and future cuts<\/a> at CISA have been a source of <a href=\"https:\/\/cyberscoop.com\/house-questions-trump-cisa-budget-cuts-2025\/\">bipartisan worry<\/a> on <a href=\"https:\/\/cyberscoop.com\/eric-swalwell-hill-briefing-planned-cisa-personnel-cuts\/\">the Hill<\/a>. Rep. Andrew Garbarino, the New York Republican who chairs the panel\u2019s cyber subcommittee, raised his own concerns again Wednesday. <\/p>\n<p>Garbarino brought up his own letter in February seeking information about CISA staff firings and their titles. He said he had not received a reply. He asked Noem for a commitment that she would answer it \u201csometime soon,\u201d to which Noem replied, \u201cAbsolutely.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Garbarino said he was \u201cconcerned that reducing CISA\u2019s staff will not help CISA accomplish the mission of protecting cybersecurity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In cyber issues unrelated to personnel reductions, Garbarino asked Noem about whether she would support a process of reopening industry consultation rather than restarting the writing of regulations under <a href=\"https:\/\/cyberscoop.com\/tag\/circia\/\">a law<\/a> to require critical infrastructure owners to report major cyber incidents.
