Smart system prompting on the front end can make a difference in the model\u2019s ability to handle security and privacy challenges.<\/p>\n<p>The bad news? It <em>really<\/em> matters in the case of Grok 4.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe first thing we found is that Grok without a system prompt is not suitable for enterprise usage, it was really easy to jailbreak and it was generating harmful content with very descriptive and detailed responses,\u201d Dorian Grano\u0161a, SplxAI\u2019s lead red-team researcher, wrote Monday.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad ad--inline_1 \">\n<div class=\"ad__inner\"> <span class=\"screen-reader-text\">Advertisement<\/span> <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>While it is not uncommon for large language models to require some security prompting to harden against jailbreaking, data leakage and harmful content generation, Grok 4 notably lags some of its biggest competitors on this front.<\/p>\n<p>Grano\u0161a notes that OpenAI\u2019s Chat GPT-4o \u201cwhile far from perfect, keeps a basic grip on security- and safety-critical behavior\u201d without requiring additional prompting by the user or organization. For example, when tested against SplxAI\u2019s attacks, GPT-4o\u2019s base model scored just 33% for security and 18% for safety. Meanwhile, Grok 4\u2019s base model \u201call but collapses,\u201dscoring 0.3% for security and 0.42% for safety, while obeying hostile instructions in over 99% of prompt injection attacks and leaking restricted data.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ddi.mohflo.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/why-skipping-security-prompting-on-groks-newest-model-is-a-huge-mistake.png?w=640&ssl=1\" alt><\/figure>\n<p>Grok 4 performs considerably worse on security and safety than base models from competitor ChatGPT-4o. (Image source: Splx AI)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn practice, this means a simple, single-sentence user message can pull Grok into disallowed territory with no resistance at all \u2014 a serious concern for any enterprise that must answer to compliance teams, regulators, and customers,\u201d Grano\u0161a wrote.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad ad--inline_1 \">\n<div class=\"ad__inner\"> <span class=\"screen-reader-text\">Advertisement<\/span> <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>To be fair, Grok\u2019s performances in these areas vastly improve when hardened with expert instruction. Splx tested their attacks against three versions of Grok 4: one with no security prompting, one with light prompting (described as being akin to what the average Software-as-a-Service company might deploy) and a more in-depth prompt.<\/p>\n<p>While the raw model fell flat, even light prompting had a big effect. Success rates jumped to 90%, while safety scores jumped to 98%. Grok comes with a \u201cbring your own security\u201d disclaimer.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad ad--inline_1 \">\n<div class=\"ad__inner\"> <span class=\"screen-reader-text\">Advertisement<\/span> <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cTwo lessons jump out. First, Grok is capable of acting responsibly \u2014 it just needs strict marching orders,\u201d Grano\u0161a said. \u201cSecond, the distance between chaos and control can be as small as a few dozen lines of text, as long as they are crafted and iterated with adversarial feedback in mind.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The research underscores lingering concern about Grok\u2019s safety and reliability for enterprise use, a week after the model began spouting antisemitic and Nazi rhetoric following a code update, according to a July 12 post by the company on X.<\/p>\n<p>Elon Musk, xAI\u2019s founder, has himself been criticized for amplifying antisemitic posts on X and giving a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/2025\/jan\/21\/the-gesture-speaks-for-itself-germans-divided-over-musks-apparent-nazi-salute\">Nazi-like salute<\/a> at President Donald Trump\u2019s inauguration.<\/p>\n<p>Nevertheless, Grok is coming to the U.S. government. xAI was one of four tech companies <a href=\"https:\/\/fedscoop.com\/elon-musk-grok-us-government-deal\/\">named Monday as recipients<\/a> of a $200 million federal contract with the Department of Defense, along with individual contracts with OpenAI, Google and Anthropic. xAI also announced that \u201cGrok for Government\u201d would be added to the General Services Administration\u2019s general schedule, opening the door for the model to be purchased and used by other federal agencies.The news comes less than a week after FedScoop <a href=\"https:\/\/fedscoop.com\/grok-for-gov-github-shows-gsa-interest-in-elon-musk-ai-tool\/\">reported<\/a> that GSA was testing Grok and other AI tools in a sandbox environment for use in the federal government.<\/p>\n<p><\/body> <\/p>\n<footer class=\"single-article__footer\" readability=\"3.6102941176471\">\n<div class=\"author-card\" readability=\"13\">\n<div class=\"author-card__avatar\">\n<figure class=\"author-card__image-wrap\"> <img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"author-card__image\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ddi.mohflo.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/why-skipping-security-prompting-on-groks-newest-model-is-a-huge-mistake-1.jpg?w=640&ssl=1\" alt=\"Derek B.
