(Image credit: Wikimedia Commons \/ D Ramey Logan) <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/header>\n<div class=\"single-article__content\">\n<div class=\"single-article__content-inner has-drop-cap\"> <html readability=\"37.336664287414\"><body readability=\"75.906059727457\"><\/p>\n<p>The U.S. judiciary announced plans to increase security for sensitive information on its case management system following what it described as \u201crecent escalated cyberattacks of a sophisticated and persistent nature.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In a Thursday <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uscourts.gov\/data-news\/judiciary-news\/2025\/08\/07\/cybersecurity-measures-strengthened-light-attacks-judiciarys-case-management-system\">statement<\/a>, the federal judiciary said it\u2019s \u201ctaking additional steps to strengthen protections for\u201d that information. It also said its \u201cfurther enhancing security of the system and to block future attacks, and it is prioritizing working with courts to mitigate the impact on litigants.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The statement from the third branch comes one day after a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2025\/08\/06\/federal-court-filing-system-pacer-hack-00496916\">Politico report<\/a> revealed that its case filing system had recently been breached. That report cited unnamed sources who were concerned that the identities of confidential court informants may have been compromised.<\/p>\n<p>While the federal courts\u2019 statement acknowledged a recent escalation in cyberattacks on its case management system, it didn\u2019t confirm details of the reported breach. In response to a FedScoop request for additional information about the reported attack, a spokesman for the Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts declined to comment and pointed back to the statement. <\/p>\n<div class=\"ad ad--inline_1 \">\n<div class=\"ad__inner\"> <span class=\"screen-reader-text\">Advertisement<\/span> <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The reported hack and statement come after a cyberbreach of the same system in 2020. In early 2021, during a hack of SolarWinds\u2019 Orion products, the federal courts disclosed that it found \u201capparent compromise\u201d of the Case Management\/Electronic Case Files system (CM\/ECF) and was investigating the matter.<\/p>\n<p>Its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uscourts.gov\/data-news\/judiciary-news\/2021\/01\/06\/judiciary-addresses-cybersecurity-breach-extra-safeguards-protect-sensitive-court-records\">statement<\/a> after that breach similarly indicated that \u201cfederal courts are immediately adding new security procedures to protect highly sensitive confidential documents filed with the courts.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Notably, more than a year after the disclosure of that hack, Rep. Jerrold Nadler, D-N.J., who was then-House Judiciary Chairman, <a href=\"https:\/\/cyberscoop.com\/federal-court-system-breach\/\">disclosed<\/a> that the committee had learned about the \u201cstartling breadth and scope\u201d of a breach in early 2020 and indicated it was separate from the SolarWinds breach that had impacted a number of federal agencies. <\/p>\n<p>In its Thursday statement, the judiciary noted that the majority of documents housed within the filing system aren\u2019t confidential and are available to the public, but some of those documents are confidential and aren\u2019t publicly accessible \u2014 known as being \u201csealed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese sensitive documents can be targets of interest to a range of threat actors. To better protect them, courts have been implementing more rigorous procedures to restrict access to sensitive documents under carefully controlled and monitored circumstances,\u201d the statement said.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad ad--inline_1 \">\n<div class=\"ad__inner\"> <span class=\"screen-reader-text\">Advertisement<\/span> <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>That response has included implementing a zero-trust architecture, expanding multifactor authentication, and maximizing use of government-furnished equipment, per a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uscourts.gov\/data-news\/judiciary-news\/2024\/09\/17\/judicial-conference-briefed-need-continued-vigilance-cybersecurity-and-workplace-conduct\">readout<\/a> from a meeting of the Judicial Conference, the judiciary\u2019s policymaking body, in 2024. The AO also appointed a chief information officer in 2023. But even then, concern about cyberattacks remained, particularly ahead of the 2024 election.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow is not the time for one ounce of complacency,\u201d U.S. Court of Appeals Judge Michael Y.
