(Photo by Andrew Harnik\/Getty Images) <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/header>\n<div class=\"single-article__content\">\n<div class=\"single-article__content-inner has-drop-cap\"> <html readability=\"34.627964022895\"><body readability=\"75.182082794308\"><\/p>\n<p>FBI cyber division cuts under President Donald Trump will reduce personnel there by half, a top Democratic senator warned Tuesday, while FBI Director Kash Patel countered that arrests and convictions have risen under the Trump administration.<\/p>\n<p>A contentious Senate Judiciary Committee hearing dominated by clashes over political violence, Patel\u2019s leadership and accusations about the politicization of the bureau nonetheless saw senators probing the FBI\u2019s performance on cybersecurity.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy office received information that cuts to the bureau\u2019s cyber division will cut personnel by half despite the ever-increasing threat posed by adverse foreign actors,\u201d said Illinois Sen. Dick Durbin, the top Democrat on the panel. The Trump administration has proposed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/05\/08\/us\/politics\/kash-patel-fbi-budget.html\">a $500 million cut<\/a> for the FBI in fiscal 2026.<\/p>\n<p>Sen. Alex Padilla, D-Calif., said that as the FBI has shifted personnel toward immigration and politically motivated investigations like the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/03\/24\/fbi-tesla-elon-musk-task-force-threats-trump-doge.html\">Tesla task force<\/a>, it has undercut other missions. \u201cIt has an impact on other priorities, like nation-state threats and ransomware investigations,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad ad--inline_1 \">\n<div class=\"ad__inner\"> <span class=\"screen-reader-text\">Advertisement<\/span> <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Padilla was one of several Senate Democrats, like Cory Booker of New Jersey and Mazie Hirono of Hawaii, who said the FBI\u2019s cyber mission was suffering because its personnel were being directed elsewhere.<\/p>\n<p>Patel told Hirono that the FBI\u2019s cyber branch was one of the bureau\u2019s \u201cmost impressive\u201d units, and that it had made 409 arrests, a 42% increase compared to the same period last year, and garnered 169 convictions.<\/p>\n<p>As Padilla questioned him about the FBI\u2019s mission to protect against election interference and the Justice Department <a href=\"https:\/\/cyberscoop.com\/doj-disbands-foreign-influence-task-force\/\">ending the Foreign Influence Task Force<\/a>, Patel answered that the FBI did not \u201cin any way divert or reallocate resources from that critical mission set.\u201d He said it was still working on it through its cyber programs, which had seen a \u201c40, 50, 60%\u201d increase in arrests in cyber threat cases involving critical infrastructure and interference with elections.<\/p>\n<p>Patel said he hadn\u2019t shifted any resources away from any critical missions like terrorism toward things like Tesla vandalism or sending federal personnel to cities like Washington, D.C. \u201cThey never left their primary job,\u201d he said. \u201cIt is a surge in law enforcement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hirono asked Patel to say who had replaced top officials who had exited the cyber division, but he said only that they were \u201csupremely qualified individuals\u201d and wouldn\u2019t give their names \u201cso you can attack them.\u201d Hirono replied, \u201cyou don\u2019t know\u201d when he wouldn\u2019t say who they were.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad ad--inline_1 \">\n<div class=\"ad__inner\"> <span class=\"screen-reader-text\">Advertisement<\/span> <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>More broadly, Patel said the FBI was taking the fight to Chinese threat groups like Salt Typhoon and Volt Typhoon, and going after ransomware and malware attackers.<\/p>\n<p>Sen. Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn., said she was concerned about a rise in artificial intelligence-generated election interference, including materials directed at her.
