similarities with a widely exploited defect in the same file-transfer service two years ago.<\/p>\n<p>Fortra, the cybersecurity vendor behind the product, disclosed and released a patch for the vulnerability \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cve.org\/CVERecord?id=CVE-2025-10035\">CVE-2025-10035<\/a> \u2014 Thursday. The deserialization vulnerability \u201callows an actor with a validly forged license response signature to deserialize an arbitrary actor-controlled object, possibly leading to command injection,\u201d the company said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fortra.com\/security\/advisories\/product-security\/fi-2025-012\">security advisory<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>File transfer services are a valuable target for attackers because they store a lot of sensitive data. If cybercriminals exploit these services, they can quickly access information from many users at once, making these services especially attractive for large-scale attacks. <\/p>\n<p>Fortra didn\u2019t provide any evidence of active exploitation and researchers from multiple security firms said they haven\u2019t observed exploitation but expect that to change soon. \u201cWe believe that it\u2019s just a matter of time and are monitoring the situation closely,\u201d Ryan Dewhurst, head of proactive threat intelligence at watchTowr, said in an email.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad ad--inline_1 \">\n<div class=\"ad__inner\"> <span class=\"screen-reader-text\">Advertisement<\/span> <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The vulnerability, which has a CVSS rating of 10, is \u201cvirtually identical to the description for <a href=\"https:\/\/nvd.nist.gov\/vuln\/detail\/cve-2023-0669\">CVE-2023-0669<\/a>,\u201d a zero-day vulnerability exploited by Clop, resulting in attacks on more than 100 organizations, and at least five other ransomware groups, Caitlin Condon, vice president of security research at VulnCheck, said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vulncheck.com\/blog\/cve-2025-10035-fortra-go-anywhere-mft\">blog post<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>Clop, a highly prolific, financially motivated ransomware group, specializes in exploiting vulnerabilities in file-transfer services. The threat group achieved mass exploitation as it <a href=\"https:\/\/cyberscoop.com\/tag\/moveit-transfer\/\">infiltrated MOVEit environments in 2023<\/a>, ultimately exposing data from more than 2,300 organizations, making it the largest and most significant cyberattack that year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy design, file transfer services process and store sensitive files,\u201d Dewhurst said. \u201cThese are a prime target for threat actors, especially ransomware groups, which can use the exposed files as blackmail.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Stephen Fewer, senior principal researcher at Rapid7, noted that file-transfer services are often exposed to the internet with network credentials supporting data access, storage and flow \u2014 factors that create a high-value target for attackers. <\/p>\n<p>The new defect doesn\u2019t require authentication, and deserialization vulnerabilities are typically more reliable than other bugs, including memory-corruption errors, Fewer said.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad ad--inline_1 \">\n<div class=\"ad__inner\"> <span class=\"screen-reader-text\">Advertisement<\/span> <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Researchers aren\u2019t aware of publicly available proof-of-concept exploit code, yet it could exist privately. \u201cAs always, if the vulnerability turns out to have been exploited in the wild as a zero-day \u2014 which was unclear at time of disclosure \u2014 patching alone will not eradicate adversaries from compromised systems,\u201d Condon said.<\/p>\n<p>Fortra told CyberScoop it discovered the vulnerability during a security check Sept. 11. \u201cWe identified that GoAnywhere customers with an admin console accessible over the internet could be vulnerable to unauthorized third-party exposure,\u201d Jessica Ryan, public relations manager at Fortra, said in an email. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe immediately developed a patch and offered customers mitigation guidance to help resolve the issue,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p>The managed file-transfer service is one of three GoAnywhere products used by more than 3,000 organizations, including Fortune 500 businesses, according to Fortra.<\/p>\n<p>The vendor appears three times on the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cisa.gov\/known-exploited-vulnerabilities-catalog?f%5B0%5D=vendor_project%3A936\">known exploited vulnerabilities catalog<\/a>, with all three defects added under a two-month period in 2023.<\/p>\n<p><\/body> <\/p>\n<footer class=\"single-article__footer\" readability=\"3.202846975089\">\n<div class=\"author-card\" readability=\"14\">\n<div class=\"author-card__avatar\">\n<figure class=\"author-card__image-wrap\"> <img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"author-card__image\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ddi.mohflo.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/researchers-raise-alarm-over-maximum-severity-defect-in-goanywhere-file-transfer-service-1.jpg?w=640&ssl=1\" alt=\"Matt Kapko\"> <\/figure>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><h4 class=\"author-card__name\">Written by Matt Kapko<\/h4>\n<p> Matt Kapko is a reporter at CyberScoop.
