(Photo by Andrew Harnik\/Getty Images) <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/header>\n<div class=\"single-article__content\">\n<div class=\"single-article__content-inner has-drop-cap\"> <html readability=\"39.608348363824\"><body readability=\"81.220764403879\"><\/p>\n<p>Suspected Iranian hackers infiltrated former national security adviser John Bolton\u2019s email account and threatened to release sensitive materials, his indictment alleges.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/d3i6fh83elv35t.cloudfront.net\/static\/2025\/10\/bolton-indictment.pdf\">The indictment<\/a> on charges that Bolton mishandled classified information, released Thursday, comes after President Donald Trump\u2019s unprecedented public call for the Justice Department to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2025\/10\/17\/bolton-comey-james-who-next-trump-indictments\/86733213007\/\">prosecute his enemies<\/a>. Bolton served under Trump in his first term as national security adviser and since has become a critic.<\/p>\n<p>The passage of the indictment related to the Iranian hackers seeks to demonstrate a representative of Bolton knew his personal emails included information they shouldn\u2019t have.<\/p>\n<p>In early July of 2021, according to the indictment, the Bolton representative contacted the FBI to alert the bureau about the apparent hack, and their suspicion that it was someone from Iran. The indictment states that it was \u201ca cyber actor believed to be associated with the Islamic Republic of Iran.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad ad--inline_1 \">\n<div class=\"ad__inner\"> <span class=\"screen-reader-text\">Advertisement<\/span> <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The Justice Department had recently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/06\/16\/us\/politics\/john-bolton-book-justice-department.html\">closed an investigation<\/a> into whether Bolton illegally published classified information in a memoir. Later that July, the apparent hackers threatened to release Bolton\u2019s emails, drawing comparisons to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/publiceditor\/2019\/10\/23\/772328703\/clinton-emails-closing-the-loop-on-a-prominent-story\">the leak<\/a> of 2016 Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton\u2019s emails.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI do not think you would be interested in the FBI being aware of the leaked content of John\u2019s email (some of which have been attached), especially after the recent acquittal,\u201d the threatening note from on or about July 25 read, the indictment states. \u201cThis could be the biggest scandal since Hillary\u2019s emails were leaked, but this time on the GOP side! Contact me before it\u2019s too late.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Days later \u2014 on or about July 28, the indictment states \u2014 Bolton\u2019s representative also told the FBI that they were \u201c[j]ust sending you the text (not the documents [the hacker] attached since there might be sensitive information in them.)\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to the indictment, \u201cA day later, on or about July 29, 2021, Bolton\u2019s representative told the FBI that Bolton would be deleting the contents of his personal email account that had been hacked.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bolton got one more message from the apparent hackers in August. \u201cOK John \u2026 As you want (apparently), we\u2019ll disseminate the expurgated sections of your book by reference to your leaked email\u2026\u201d It\u2019s not clear if the hackers followed through on the threat, or what they demanded of Bolton not to release the sections.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad ad--inline_1 \">\n<div class=\"ad__inner\"> <span class=\"screen-reader-text\">Advertisement<\/span> <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Bolton didn\u2019t disclose to the FBI that he had used a hacked email account to share classified information with two unnamed relatives, \u201cnor did he tell the FBI that the hackers now held this information,\u201d the indictment reads.<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.documentcloud.org\/documents\/26090919-bolton-affidavit\/\">search warrant affidavit<\/a> released last month contains a passage headed \u201cHack of Bolton AOL Account by Foreign Entity,\u201d but the passage itself is redacted.<\/p>\n<p>Bolton <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2025\/oct\/17\/john-bolton-indicted-trump\">surrendered to authorities<\/a> on Friday.
