(Image via Getty) <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/header>\n<div class=\"single-article__content\">\n<div class=\"single-article__content-inner has-drop-cap\"> <html readability=\"56.203014345379\"><body readability=\"113.79264349232\"><\/p>\n<p>Synthetic media, including AI-generated deepfake audio and video, has been increasingly leveraged by criminals, scammers and spies to deceive individuals and businesses.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes they do so by imitating an employee\u2019s CEO, urging them to transfer large sums of money or provide them access to work accounts. Other times this fake media is created by a competitor or bad actor to ruin the reputation of executives or their companies.<\/p>\n<p>Now cybersecurity insurance provider Coalition is offering coverage to organizations for deepfake-related incidents. On Tuesday, the company announced its cybersecurity insurance policies will now cover certain deepfake incidents, including ones that lead to reputational harm. The coverage will also include response services such as forensic analysis, legal support for takedown and removal for deepfakes online and crisis communications assistance.<\/p>\n<p>In response to questions about deepfake coverage, Michael Phillips, head of Coalition\u2019s cyber portfolio underwriting, said Coalition has covered deepfake-enabled fraud leading to fraudulent transfers since last year. Now, coverage is being expanded to \u201cany video, image, or audio content that is created or manipulated through the use of AI by a third party, and that falsely purports to be authentic content depicting any past or present executive or employee, or falsely frames the organization\u2019s products or services.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday\u2019s threat actors use AI and deepfakes for more than quick rip-and-run wire transfer theft, so we expanded our coverage to include the additional expenses a business could incur,\u201d Phillips wrote. \u201cWe have seen many examples of this type of threat in recent headlines. For example, the deepfake of Warren Buffett promoting fake investment and crypto schemes forced Berkshire Hathaway to issue public warnings not only to protect its reputation, but also to prevent the spread of misinformation, market manipulation, and investor fraud.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In an interview, Shelly Ma, incident response lead at Coalition, told CyberScoop that deepfakes still represent a small fraction of the claims the company processes, and that 98% of their claims don\u2019t involve any advanced use of AI.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad ad--inline_1 \">\n<div class=\"ad__inner\"> <span class=\"screen-reader-text\">Advertisement<\/span> <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>This is largely because \u201cthe low hanging fruits still very much work\u201d for malicious hackers, with exploited VPNs, unpatched software and phishing still largely effective for those attempting to gain access to targeted organizations. Even in impersonation scams, attackers tend to rely on lower tech tactics like spoofing phone numbers.<\/p>\n<p>Ma said that deepfake-enabled breaches they have seen tend to be from sophisticated threat actors that can bring the necessary technical expertise to deploy them in credible and believable ways.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the handful of cases where we have spotted deepfakes, we\u2019ve seen attackers mostly use AI-generated voice or text to impersonate trusted contacts,\u201d said Ma. \u201cSo typically, it would be a CEO or finance executive to authorize fraudulent payments or share credentials, and these are highly targeted and designed to blend into an existing workflow, which makes them quite dangerous even when they\u2019re not yet that common.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While traditional phishing relies on persuading victims through convincing text, deepfake video and audio adds \u201ca whole new dimension of sensor authenticity\u201d that make this type of attack more effective. Malicious parties can also generate dozens of tailored voice or text impersonations \u201cin minutes,\u201d something she said used to take days of reconnaissance and manual effort to pull off before LLM automation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese attacks, they shortcut skepticism, and they can bypass even very well-trained employees,\u201d Ma said. <\/p>\n<div class=\"ad ad--inline_1 \">\n<div class=\"ad__inner\"> <span class=\"screen-reader-text\">Advertisement<\/span> <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>These successful campaigns still require a lot of work, and for now, small and medium-sized businesses may not be attractive enough targets to justify using AI-enabled attacks. However, Ma estimated that as AI technology becomes more advanced, affordable and accessible, these organizations are likely just 12 to 24 months away from seeing AI regularly used in fraud and business email compromise scams.<\/p>\n<p>That aligns with what some other groups are saying. This week, identity provider ID.me said the use of AI and deepfake technology to bypass verification tools has made the barrier to entry for cybercriminals \u201calarmingly low.\u201d ID.me\u2019s identity systems across government and the private sector have seen AI attacks, including deepfakes, \u201cwith increasing frequency.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile sophisticated hackers and entities have the skills and abilities to create bespoke exploits and bypass methods, these tools open the door to fraud to a much wider range of criminals,\u201d the company said in a new fraud report released this week.<\/p>\n<p>In September, ID.me <a href=\"https:\/\/network.id.me\/press-releases\/id-me-raises-340-million-to-combat-ai-driven-fraud-and-expand-secure-digital-identity\/\">announced<\/a> it had raised $340 million in Series E funding, which they said would go partly toward accelerating technologies that prevent and combat AI-driven fraud. <\/p>\n<p><\/body> <\/p>\n<footer class=\"single-article__footer\" readability=\"3.5125448028674\">\n<div class=\"author-card\" readability=\"13\">\n<div class=\"author-card__avatar\">\n<figure class=\"author-card__image-wrap\"> <img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"author-card__image\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ddi.mohflo.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/organizations-can-now-buy-cyber-insurance-that-covers-deepfakes-1.jpg?w=640&ssl=1\" alt=\"Derek B.
