readability=\"45.26797194623\"><body readability=\"92.140594059406\"><\/p>\n<p>A federal court has thrown out a lawsuit brought by the Trump administration attempting to force the state of California to turn over sensitive voter data.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/assets.aclu.org\/live\/uploads\/2026\/01\/128-CA-MTD-Order.pdf\">decision<\/a>, issued by the U.S. Central District Court of Southern California, is a major setback to the federal government\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/statescoop.com\/secretaries-of-state-ask-doj-to-clarify-how-its-using-their-voter-data\/\">massive data collection effort<\/a> on American voters, and its argument that existing civil rights laws permit it to demand that information from states in the name of election integrity.<\/p>\n<p>The ruling, signed by Judge David Carter, called voting \u201ca fundamental political right\u201d and stated flatly: \u201cthe government\u2019s request is unprecedented and illegal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carter noted that the civil rights laws the Department of Justice cited to justify its demand for the records were \u201cto protect hard won civil rights victories allowing access to the ballot box,\u201d not to give the executive branch or president unfettered access to voter data.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad ad--inline_1 \">\n<div class=\"ad__inner\"> <span class=\"screen-reader-text\">Advertisement<\/span> <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The opinion also described the breadth and scope of the government\u2019s request as \u201cunprecedented,\u201d noting it was seeking information such as names, social security numbers, home addresses, voting history and \u201cother sensitive information\u201d for nearly 23 million Californians. While California officials offered the federal government redacted versions of the information, DOJ\u2019s lawsuit asked for the full, unredacted copies of the records.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe pieces of legislation at issue in this litigation were not passed as an unrestricted means for the Executive to collect highly sensitive information about the American people,\u201d Carter wrote. \u201cIt is not for the Executive, or even this Court to authorize the use of civil rights legislation as a tool to forsake the privacy rights of millions of Americans. That power belongs solely to Congress.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Last September, the federal government <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/politics\/story\/2025-09-25\/justice-department-sues-california-other-states-that-have-declined-to-share-voter-rolls\">sued<\/a> California Secretary of State Shirely Weber\u2014one of dozens of state officials facing federal lawsuits for refusing to hand over unredacted voter data. The federal government claims the lawsuits are meant to ensure \u201cclean\u201d voter rolls and deter noncitizen voting and voter fraud, but neither it nor Trump have ever been able to prove their claims in court.<\/p>\n<p>Election and legal experts have predicted that the administration\u2019s efforts to compel states to hand voter records over to the federal government would face serious pushback in the courts, as the constitution explicitly empowers states and Congress to manage elections.<\/p>\n<p>The League of Women Voters of California, the American Civil Liberties Union, the ACLU Foundation of Northern California, and the ACLU Foundation of Southern California brought a joint countersuit on behalf of voters to halt the DOJ\u2019s demands. The groups argued state laws and federal privacy protection prohibited the disclosure of highly sensitive voter data.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad ad--inline_1 \">\n<div class=\"ad__inner\"> <span class=\"screen-reader-text\">Advertisement<\/span> <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>In a joint statement following the decision, the groups hailed the win and said it \u201caffirms that the federal government is not entitled to unfettered access to private voter data.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVoters should never have to choose between their privacy and their fundamental right to vote,\u201d the statement said. \u201cStates must retain authority to manage elections in ways that safeguard sensitive information, and federal agencies must respect the limits on their power.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carter also issued a stark warning about the impact of adopting the Trump administration\u2019s legal logic on ballot access, saying that \u201cthe taking of democracy does not occur in one fell swoop; it is chipped away piece-by piece until there is nothing left.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe case before the Court is one of these cuts that imperils all Americans,\u201d Carter wrote. The erosion of privacy and rolling back of voting rights is a decision for open and public debate within the Legislative Branch, not the Executive. The Constitution demands such respect, and the Executive may not unilaterally usurp the authority over elections it seeks to do so here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The administration\u2019s demand to states like California \u201cgoes far beyond what Congress intended\u201d when it passed the underlying civil rights laws cited in the government\u2019s justification, and citizens would rightly fear that the data could be misused by \u201cexecutive fiat.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe centralization of this information by the federal government would have a chilling effect on voter registration which would inevitably lead to decreasing voter turnout as voters fear that their information is being used for some inappropriate or unlawful purpose,\u201d Carter wrote in his conclusion.<\/p>\n<p><\/body> <\/p>\n<footer class=\"single-article__footer\" readability=\"3.3594548551959\">\n<div class=\"author-card\" readability=\"13\">\n<div class=\"author-card__avatar\">\n<figure class=\"author-card__image-wrap\"> <img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"author-card__image\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ddi.mohflo.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/federal-court-dismisses-trump-doj-lawsuit-seeking-california-voter-data-1.jpg?w=640&ssl=1\" alt=\"Derek B.
