The pair of alleged criminals who were living in Ukraine were not named.<\/p>\n<p>German police publicly identified a third Russian national \u2014 Oleg Evgenievich Nefedov \u2014 as Black Basta\u2019s alleged leader. Nefedov, a 35-year-old who was subsequently added to the most-wanted lists of <a href=\"https:\/\/eumostwanted.eu\/#\/nefedov-oleg-evgenievich\">Europol<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.interpol.int\/How-we-work\/Notices\/Red-Notices\/View-Red-Notices#2025-100086\">Interpol<\/a>, allegedly formed and ran Black Basta since 2022, authorities said. <\/p>\n<p>He is accused of extorting more than 100 companies in Germany and about 600 other countries globally. Nefedov\u2019s current whereabouts are unknown, but he is believed to be living in Russia.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad ad--inline_1 \">\n<div class=\"ad__inner\"> <span class=\"screen-reader-text\">Advertisement<\/span> <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Authorities said Nefedov may have previously been involved with the Conti ransomware group, which disbanded in 2022 after its internal messages were also leaked. Members of the Russian-language ransomware collective rebranded under three subgroups: Zeon, Black Basta and Quantum, which quickly rebranded to <a href=\"https:\/\/cyberscoop.com\/blacksuit-royal-ransomware-450-us-victims\/\">Royal<\/a> before rebranding again to <a href=\"https:\/\/cyberscoop.com\/blacksuit-ransomware-takedown\/\">BlackSuit<\/a> in 2024. <\/p>\n<p>Police said they seized data and cryptocurrency assets during their searches of the alleged Black Basta participants\u2019 residences in Ivano-Frankivsk and Lviv, Ukraine, but they did not provide further detail about what the evidence revealed.<\/p>\n<p>The pair of alleged Black Basta co-conspirators are accused of specializing in stealing credentials, which were used to break into targeted companies\u2019 networks, steal confidential data and launch malware to encrypt data for extortion attempts.<\/p>\n<p>International law enforcement agencies\u2019 ongoing efforts to target Black Basta and its alleged participants underscores a sustained effort to track cybercriminals despite the group\u2019s relative dormancy. <\/p>\n<p>Black Basta\u2019s data leak site was shut down shortly after its internal chats were leaked last year, but uncaptured cybercriminals typically scatter and join new groups in the wake of a takedown or disbandment, said Allan Liska, threat intelligence analyst at Recorded Future.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad ad--inline_1 \">\n<div class=\"ad__inner\"> <span class=\"screen-reader-text\">Advertisement<\/span> <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cEven if Black Basta hasn\u2019t been active, it doesn\u2019t mean that the people behind it haven\u2019t been,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Ransomware experts said Nefedov\u2019s ringleader position at Black Basta and his previous involvement with Conti was already known in law enforcement and threat intelligence circles.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe accusation signals less about the impact of Black Basta and more about the significance of Nefedov,\u201d said Ian Gray, vice president of cyber threat intelligence operations at Flashpoint. <\/p>\n<p>The formal naming and request for information on Nefedov aligns with a broader law enforcement strategy to target core leadership responsible for orchestrating cyberattacks, Gray added.<\/p>\n<p>Ransomware response is a never-ending pursuit that consistentely attracts new players and new groups at a faster clip than law enforcement can manage. <\/p>\n<div class=\"ad ad--inline_1 \">\n<div class=\"ad__inner\"> <span class=\"screen-reader-text\">Advertisement<\/span> <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cYou cut one head off and two appear,\u201d Liska said. \u201cYou still have to cut the head off, you still have to stop the activity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While ransomware activity remains elevated, law enforcement is sticking to <a href=\"https:\/\/cyberscoop.com\/cybercrime-crackdown-operation-endgame-operation-secure\/\">multidimensional countermeasures<\/a> by targeting operators and affiliates, <a href=\"https:\/\/cyberscoop.com\/operation-endgame-ransomware-infrastructure-takedown-europol\/\">initial access brokers<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/cyberscoop.com\/lumma-stealer-infostealer-takedown\/\">infostealers<\/a>, infrastructure providers and key services criminals use to deploy or facilitate the ransomware ecosystem.<\/p>\n<p>These takedowns, seizures, indictments and arrests are sometimes organized under ongoing international sting operations such as <a href=\"https:\/\/cyberscoop.com\/operation-endgame-disrupts-global-malware-networks-rhadamanthys-venomrat-elysium\/\">Operation Endgame<\/a>, which has neutralized <a href=\"https:\/\/cyberscoop.com\/danabot-malware-botnet-seizure-takedown\/\">malware networks<\/a>, remote access trojans, botnets and other cybercrime enablers. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese operations can\u2019t be one-and-done,\u201d Liska said. \u201cThey have to be interconnected and use that intelligence to build more cases against other actors.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><\/body> <\/p>\n<footer class=\"single-article__footer\" readability=\"3.5680473372781\">\n<div class=\"author-card\" readability=\"14\">\n<div class=\"author-card__avatar\">\n<figure class=\"author-card__image-wrap\"> <img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"author-card__image\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ddi.mohflo.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/black-bastas-alleged-ringleader-identified-as-authorities-raid-homes-of-other-members-1.jpg?w=640&ssl=1\" alt=\"Matt Kapko\"> <\/figure>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><h4 class=\"author-card__name\">Written by Matt Kapko<\/h4>\n<p> Matt Kapko is a reporter at CyberScoop.
