(Photo by Yi-Chin Lee\/Houston Chronicle via Getty Images) <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/header>\n<div class=\"single-article__content\">\n<div class=\"single-article__content-inner has-drop-cap\"> <html readability=\"24.580083789881\"><body readability=\"53.803060023539\"><\/p>\n<p>Iranian government hackers are launching disruptive cyberattacks on American energy and water infrastructure, U.S. government agencies \u201curgently\u201d warned Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>The hackers are taking aim at devices and systems that control industrial processes, and have harmed victims in the last month following the onset of U.S.-Israel strikes against Iran, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cisa.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/2026-04\/AA26-097A-Iranian-Affiliated-Cyber-Actors-Exploit-Programmable-Logic-Controllers-Across-US-Critical-Infrastructure_508c.pdf\">joint alert<\/a> from the FBI, National Security Agency, Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, Environmental Protection Agency, Energy Department and Cyber Command.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIran-affiliated advanced persistent threat (APT) actors are conducting exploitation activity targeting internet-facing operational technology (OT) devices, including programmable logic controllers (PLCs) manufactured by Rockwell Automation\/Allen-Bradley,\u201d the alert states. \u201cThis activity has led to PLC disruptions across several U.S. critical infrastructure sectors through malicious interactions with the project file and manipulation of data on human machine interface (HMI) and supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) displays.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>U.S. government agencies <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cisa.gov\/news-events\/cybersecurity-advisories\/aa23-335a\">have warned before<\/a> about Iranian hackers going after similar targets with those similar methods. The first such warning came after an Iranian government-linked group took credit for <a href=\"https:\/\/cyberscoop.com\/pennsylvania-water-facility-hack-iran\/\">attacking a Pennsylvania water facility<\/a> in late 2023.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad ad--inline_1 \">\n<div class=\"ad__inner\"> <span class=\"screen-reader-text\">Advertisement<\/span> <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Since March of this year, however, the agencies said they have seen new victims emerge from an advanced persistent threat group tied to Iran.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe authoring agencies identified (through engagements with victim organizations) an Iranian-affiliated APT-group that disrupted the function of PLCs,\u201d the alert reads. \u201cThese PLCs were deployed across multiple U.S. critical infrastructure sectors (including Government Services and Facilities, WWS, and Energy sectors) within a wide variety of industrial automation processes.
