(Mattie Neretin\/CNP\/Sipa USA) <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/header>\n<div class=\"single-article__content\">\n<div class=\"single-article__content-inner has-drop-cap\"> <html readability=\"26.269379844961\"><body readability=\"56.827371695179\"><\/p>\n<p>Sean Plankey, the long-sidelined nominee to lead the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, asked President Donald Trump on Wednesday to withdraw his nomination.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt this point in time, I am asking the President to remove my nomination from consideration,\u201d he said in a notification letter seen by CyberScoop. \u201cAfter thirteen months since my initial nomination, it has become clear that the Senate will not confirm me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Plankey\u2019s request comes weeks after the Senate confirmed MarkWayne Mullin to lead the Department of Homeland Security, CISA\u2019s parent agency.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Nation and Department of Homeland Security Secretary MarkWayne Mullin requires a confirmed director of CISA without further delay,\u201d Plankey wrote, adding thanks to Trump himself. \u201cWhile I humbly request the removal of my nomination, I wholeheartedly support President Trump\u2019s upcoming nomination for CISA and look forward to the continued success of the United States of America.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad ad--inline_1 \">\n<div class=\"ad__inner\"> <span class=\"screen-reader-text\">Advertisement<\/span> <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Plankey\u2019s nomination was <a href=\"https:\/\/cyberscoop.com\/sean-plankey-cisa-nomination-stalled-senate-holds\/\">considered dead<\/a> by most at the end of last year. <a href=\"https:\/\/cyberscoop.com\/sean-plankey-re-nominated-to-lead-cisa\/\">His renomination<\/a> this year caught many by surprise, with CBS reporting the paperwork filing was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/trump-nominee-cisa-cyber-agency-removed-as-senior-dhs-adviser\/\">an accident<\/a>. The White House denied that.<\/p>\n<p>Numerous senators had placed holds on his nomination, including GOP senators who held him up over matters unrelated to cybersecurity. Most prominently, Sen. Rick Scott, R-Fla, had placed a hold on his nomination over a Coast Guard contract with a Florida company that DHS had partially canceled.<\/p>\n<p>Plankey had been serving as an adviser to then-DHS Secretary Kristi Noem on Coast Guard matters. He <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/feed\/update\/urn:li:activity:7434822099187183616\/\">retired from the Coast Guard<\/a> last month.<\/p>\n<p>While Plankey awaited confirmation, Bridget Bean, then Madhu Gottumukkala, served as acting director. Gottumukkala recently left the position for another at DHS amid <a href=\"https:\/\/cyberscoop.com\/cisa-personnel-cuts-trump-second-term-analysis\/\">widespread complaints<\/a> about his leadership. <a href=\"https:\/\/cyberscoop.com\/cisa-leadership-change-madhu-gottumukkala-nick-andersen\/\">Nick Andersen<\/a> is currently serving as acting director.<\/p>\n<p>Plankey told CyberScoop he had discussed withdrawing his nomination with Mullin. He said he has a \u201cpositive relationship\u201d with Mullin and supported his leadership of DHS. And Plankey called Andersen \u201cone of the most competent cybersecurity people in the country.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad ad--inline_1 \">\n<div class=\"ad__inner\"> <span class=\"screen-reader-text\">Advertisement<\/span> <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Politico <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2026\/04\/22\/sean-plankey-withdraws-nomination-cisa-00887136?utm_medium=twitter&utm_source=dlvr.it\">first reported<\/a> Plankey\u2019s withdrawal request. The White House, DHS and CISA did not respond to an official request for comment.<\/p>\n<p>Plankey\u2019s plans leave the agency with yet more upheaval. Trump has dramatically cut personnel and budget at CISA, with many top officials pushed out or otherwise departing.
