readability=\"49.931891673403\"><body readability=\"103.98939114391\"><\/p>\n<p>A Chinese national allegedly involved in a massive, pandemic-era attack spree that compromised nearly 13,000 U.S. organizations was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/opa\/pr\/prolific-chinese-state-sponsored-contract-hacker-extradited-italy\">extradited from Italy to the United States<\/a> and formally charged in federal court, the Justice Department said Monday.<\/p>\n<p>Xu Zewei and his co-conspirators are accused of exploiting a string of zero-day vulnerabilities in Microsoft Exchange Server to steal research on COVID-19 vaccines, treatment and testing during the initial wave and subsequent height of the pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>His alleged crimes, directed by China\u2019s intelligence services, were part of a broader espionage campaign known as HAFNIUM, which targeted infectious disease experts, law firms, universities, defense contractors and policy think tanks, according to an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/opa\/media\/1407196\/dl\">indictment <\/a>filed against Xu and Zhang Yu, who remains at large. <\/p>\n<p>The China state-sponsored threat group behind those attacks against Microsoft customers, and <a href=\"https:\/\/cyberscoop.com\/crowdstrike-silk-typhoon-murky-panda-china-espionage\/\">many<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/cyberscoop.com\/silk-typhoon-targets-it-services\/\">other<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/cyberscoop.com\/china-brickstorm-grimbolt-dell-zero-day\/\">vendors\u2019 customers<\/a> since, is now more widely known as Silk Typhoon.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad ad--inline_1 \">\n<div class=\"ad__inner\"> <span class=\"screen-reader-text\">Advertisement<\/span> <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cXu will now answer for his alleged role in HAFNIUM, a group responsible for a vast intrusion campaign directed by China\u2019s Ministry of State Security that compromised more than 12,700 U.S. organizations,\u201d Brett Leatherman, assistant director of the FBI\u2019s Cyber Division, said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe is one of many contractors the Chinese government uses to obscure its hand in cyber operations, and others who do the same face the same risk,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Xu allegedly committed the attacks while working for Shanghai Powerock Network, one of many companies that conducted attacks for China\u2019s various intelligence services, according to court records.<\/p>\n<p>Italian authorities <a href=\"https:\/\/cyberscoop.com\/italian-authorities-arrest-chinese-man-over-microsoft-exchange-server-hack-targeting-of-covid-19-researchers\/\">arrested Xu<\/a> at the United States\u2019 request in Milan in July. His capture underscores a window of opportunity U.S. officials and allies can take when nation-state attackers travel to countries that cooperate with the United States.<\/p>\n<p>Italy extradited Xu to the United States Saturday but didn\u2019t release his extradition orders until Monday, Simona Candido, his attorney in Italy, told CyberScoop.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad ad--inline_1 \">\n<div class=\"ad__inner\"> <span class=\"screen-reader-text\">Advertisement<\/span> <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Officials said Monday marked Xu\u2019s first appearance in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Texas. He is currently being held at a federal prison in Houston.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have pursued this moment across years and continents, and the message this office sends today is the same one we sent when we first unsealed this indictment: we will work to protect the American people,\u201d John G.E. Marck, acting U.S. attorney for the Southern District of Texas, said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>Xu allegedly worked under the direction of China\u2019s Ministry of State Security\u2019s Shanghai State Security Bureau to break into U.S. organizations\u2019 networks, steal data and implant webshells for persistent remote access. Officials also accuse Xu of stealing information regarding U.S. policymakers and government agencies from a global law firm with offices in Washington. <\/p>\n<p>Microsoft first warned customers about the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/security\/blog\/2021\/03\/02\/hafnium-targeting-exchange-servers\/\">HAFNIUM campaign<\/a> in March 2021.
