(Photo by Anna Moneymaker\/Getty Images) <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/header>\n<div class=\"single-article__content\">\n<div class=\"single-article__content-inner has-drop-cap\"> <html readability=\"31.101670506912\"><body readability=\"66.779471544715\"><\/p>\n<p>Trump administration budget chief Russell Vought told lawmakers Tuesday that he\u2019s willing to work with Department of Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin on re-staffing up the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, following deep personnel cuts and further proposed reductions in the fiscal 2027 budget blueprint.<\/p>\n<p>Mullin said last week at a House Appropriations Subcommittee on Homeland Security hearing that he would like to hire 600 more people at CISA, similar to remarks he made earlier this month at <a href=\"https:\/\/cyberscoop.com\/dhs-secretary-markwayne-mullin-pinpoints-optimal-cisa-staffing-levels\/\">another House hearing<\/a>. President Donald Trump has cut or lost more than 1,000 from an agency that stood around 3,400-strong at the end of the Biden administration \u2014 cuts criticized by <a href=\"https:\/\/cyberscoop.com\/lawmakers-bipartisan-cisa-budget-cuts\/\">lawmakers in both parties<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>At a House Appropriations Subcommittee on Financial Services and General Government hearing Tuesday, Rep. Mark Amodei, R-Nev., asked Vought about Mullin\u2019s CISA remarks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t just flip a light switch on, and you got 600 folks over in CISA now. What\u2019s the plan for getting CISA fully operational?\u201d Amodei, who chairs the panel\u2019s Subcommittee on Homeland Security, asked. \u201cHow do we make sure we have a robust, effective, cost-effective CISA force? Because I don\u2019t think anybody thinks we have it now.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad ad--inline_1 \">\n<div class=\"ad__inner\"> <span class=\"screen-reader-text\">Advertisement<\/span> <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Vought, director of the Office of Management and Budget, said he hasn\u2019t received a formal request from Mullin to increase CISA\u2019s number of full-time employees, but knows that hiring isn\u2019t instantaneous.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was not here when we developed <a href=\"https:\/\/cyberscoop.com\/hill-dems-hammer-gop-for-250m-cisa-budget-cut\/\">this budget<\/a>, so if he feels the need to have additional resources, we will work through that internally, and at the appropriate time, come up and brief you,\u201d he answered Amodei. \u201cI do think he\u2019s in the process still of getting his arms wrapped around the department,\u201d he said. Mullen became DHS secretary in late March.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is probably one of those things, particularly in the cyber world, you now have a year and a half of a new administration,\u201d Vought continued, and referred to conservative complaints about how CISA handled election security and disinformation under Biden. \u201cWe saw this agency had major concerns with it in our four years outside of government and with new management, I think it\u2019s now an agency, or could be an agency, that plays a very valuable part for DHS\u2019s portfolio.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bringing hundreds of new CISA personnel on board could prove challenging for reasons beyond the usual bureaucratic hurdles and security clearance processes that slow any federal hires in the national security space.
