(Moritz Frankenberg\/Getty Images) <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/header>\n<div class=\"single-article__content\">\n<div class=\"single-article__content-inner has-drop-cap\"> <html readability=\"53.753877973113\"><body readability=\"110.13255813953\"><\/p>\n<p>A pair of young men were sentenced to 66 months in jail for committing a cyberattack on the Transport for London that brought the network\u2019s operations to a standstill in 2024, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalcrimeagency.gov.uk\/news\/two-sentenced-for-hacking-transport-for-london-in-uk-s-biggest-ever-cyber-crime-case\">United Kingdom\u2019s National Crime Agency<\/a> said Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>Thalha Jubair and Owen Flowers were <a href=\"https:\/\/cyberscoop.com\/scattered-spider-teenagers-arrested-uk\/\">arrested at their homes<\/a> in September 2025, barely a year after the attack, and pleaded guilty last month just as their trials were set to begin. Flowers was <a href=\"https:\/\/cyberscoop.com\/british-teen-arrested-over-cyberattack-on-london-transportation-agency\/\">previously arrested<\/a> in connection with the attack in September, but was released after questioning by officers.<\/p>\n<p>Jubair and Flowers were leading members and highly involved in <a href=\"https:\/\/cyberscoop.com\/scattered-spider-social-engineering-cybercrime\/\">Scattered Spider<\/a>, a nebulous hacker subset of <a href=\"https:\/\/cyberscoop.com\/fbi-warning-the-com-cybercrime-extortion-violence\/\">The Com<\/a>, according to researchers. The 20-year-old Jubair was a prolific cybercriminal and <a href=\"https:\/\/cyberscoop.com\/thalha-jubair-uk-teen-scattered-spider-leader\/\">core member of the unbound collective<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>U.S. authorities last year accused Jubair of direct, prominent involvement in at least 120 cyberattacks, including extortion of 47 U.S.-based organizations and the January 2025 attack on the federal court system. <\/p>\n<div class=\"ad ad--inline_1 \">\n<div class=\"ad__inner\"> <span class=\"screen-reader-text\">Advertisement<\/span> <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Officials said they traced a combined total of at least $89.5 million in cryptocurrency, at the time of payments, to Bitcoin addresses and servers controlled by Jubair. Two financial services firms paid Jubair $25 million and $36.2 million, respectively, in Bitcoin between June and November 2023, according to an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/usao-nj\/media\/1414461\/dl?inline\">unsealed criminal complaint<\/a> against Jubair. <\/p>\n<p>At the time of Jubair\u2019s arrest, \u201che was one of the four principal people that we associated with Scattered Spider,\u201d and one of the two most core players, Adam Meyers, senior vice president of counter adversary operations at CrowdStrike, told CyberScoop. <\/p>\n<p>Jubair and Owens had significant resources and support, and \u201cvictim payments were reinvested back into the enterprise,\u201d said Allison Nixon, chief research officer at Unit 221B. <\/p>\n<p>The lasting impact of Jubair and Owens\u2019 capture and imprisonment remains hazy.<\/p>\n<p>U.K. authorities insist Jubair and Owens\u2019 arrests and punishment \u201ceffectively halted the group\u2019s criminal activity,\u201d yet they added that other cybercriminals continue to use the Scattered Spider brand in more recent attacks. <\/p>\n<div class=\"ad ad--inline_1 \">\n<div class=\"ad__inner\"> <span class=\"screen-reader-text\">Advertisement<\/span> <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Thursday\u2019s announcement \u201crepresents a significant step in holding accountable two members of Scattered Spider, a group that has repeatedly relied on data extortion, SIM-swap attacks, and other social engineering techniques to infiltrate networks and undermine critical services,\u201d Brett Leatherman, assistant director of the FBI Cyber Division, said in a statement. <\/p>\n<p>The FBI also noted, in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/posts\/fbicyber_today-the-uks-national-crime-agency-nca-activity-7483521274514837504-GT56\/\">LinkedIn post<\/a>, that members of Scattered Spider \u201ccontinue to victimize organizations around the world and cause significant financial and operational harm.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When Owens, now 18, was first arrested for the Transport for London attack in 2024, investigators said he was \u201cin the process of hacking the systems of U.S. health care companies SSM Health Care Corporation and Sutter Health, which had been infiltrated and damaged.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Officials also said Jubair and Owens failed to cooperate after their arrests. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is the largest cybercrime prosecution ever brought before the U.K. courts and the culmination of nearly two years of painstaking work,\u201d Paul Foster, head of the National Crime Center\u2019s National Cybercrime Unit, said in a statement. <\/p>\n<div class=\"ad ad--inline_1 \">\n<div class=\"ad__inner\"> <span class=\"screen-reader-text\">Advertisement<\/span> <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cScattered Spider has been the most significant cybercrime threat to the U.K. in recent years.
